Just as easily as one well-timed collection or collaboration can propel previously unknown or niche brands into the mainstream, a single bad season can be the death knell for small, independent brands. That’s to say nothing of the business of fashion: Designers who have made a name for themselves with independent, eponymous labels are invariably poached by the industry’s giants, and eventually are forced to choose between the high-profile appointment—and financial security—or maintaining their independent labels.

It means that there are dozens of revered brands that no longer exist, or that no longer exist the way they once did. With licensing rights or trademarks sold off to conglomerates, the companies trade on ever-diminishing clout while the designers have moved on to new projects.

Grailed is built on a passion for archival clothing and the archive community is, in turn, built on individuals who have, over the years, collected garments from discontinued brands and big houses alike. There is no shortage of archive pieces from defunct brands on Grailed. It can be exhilarating to find a piece you forgot existed, from a brand you had forgotten you loved—it’s why so many check Grailed religiously.

We’ve rounded up 13 of the best defunct labels whose wares are still available on Grailed, covering everything from more traditional menswear to the avant-garde to the niche brands that meshed streetwear and capital-F fashion before it was cool to do so.
