The Met Gala, championed as “Fashion’s Super Bowl,” is always a spectacle in one way or another. When it came to this year’s soirée, however, the word "spectacle" really doesn’t do it justice.

Themed around Susan Sontag’s landmark essay Notes on ‘Camp’, the 2019 Met Gala was a celebration of the offbeat, garish and glamourous—when combined into a saccharine, over-the-top concoction, it all adds up to “camp”. Co-hosted by fashion’s current camp darling, Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, there was no shortage of saccharine, sickeningly sugary outfits.

What makes this year’s event interesting is that the intention is to dress outlandishly, making what’s “bad”, “good” and what’s “good”, well...boring. Regardless, even with celebrities and fashion icons riffing on this unconventional topic, there’s definitely some who finessed the theme, and others who went just a little too literal with this year’s campy event. Clearly in doubt, some simply opted to wear Gucci. Scope our favorites and fails below.
