Considering it’s helped keep the luxury house in business for decades and is one of the most well recognized pieces of luggage in the world, we clearly had to include the Louis Vuitton Bandouliére 55 Keepall. Debuted in 1930 when the trunk maker adapted to soft leather goods to accommodate modern sensibilities, the bag became synonymous with French aristocracy and eventually a sign of wealth and taste the world over. Still the most popular bag in the brand’s arsenal—among men, at least—the bag underwent countless revisions, from the original brown coated canvas to, more recently, graphite and various collabs during Marc Jacobs and Kim Jones respective tenures. Now, under the direction of Virgil Abloh and Nicholas Ghesiquiere respectively, the iconic shape has been reworked even further, with collaborators from Jeff Koons and new fabrications including reflective “Prism” and bags made entirely of natural vegetable tanned leather.

While proportions and colorways constantly shift, the main components of the bag—a stiff, cylindrical shape, leather handles and detachable strap, chunky metallic “LV” branded zipper—never change. With just a single closure at the top of the bag, the Keepall is sleek—finish and colorway notwithstanding. Lacking internal compartments or additional functionality, the focus here is all quality, aesthetic and, of course, branding. For a not-so-subtle luggage statement, look no further.

American outdoor experts The North Face clearly know a thing or two about outdoor travel, and its patented Base Camp duffle is a prime example. Named after “base camp”—the term climbers use for the first stop on high-altitude climbs such as Denali or Everest—the bag features all the bells and whistles required for grueling mountaineering.

Made from a durable laminate and ballistic nylon, the bag is entirely waterproof, fully packable and tear and abrasion resistant. As opposed to others on this list, the Base Camp duffle is not an exercise in branding or vanity, but rather a simply well made bag designed to withstand the elements—and therein lies its appeal.

Available in a range of sizes from 30 (XS) to 150 liters (XXL), the Base Camp features a D-shaped top zipper closure, multiple internal mesh pockets, four compression straps and dual carrying straps which cleverly convert into shoulder straps allowing you to wear the duffle as a backpack. Featuring the usual, bold The North Face color palette, this is the perfect duffle for the seasoned outdoor veterans.

Like longtime competitor Louis Vuitton, Goyard began as a trunk maker in 1853 (one year earlier than Louis Vuitton) but shifted its focus to soft leather goods and luggage to suit contemporary tastes at the turn of the century. While the company is best known for its coated canvas totes, the brand also offers a wide variety of luggage options including the highly sought-after Boeing 55. Named after the notorious airplane manufacturer, the duffle is perfectly suited for transcontinental flights, fitting easily into the overhead cabin.

While the coated canvas is similar to its Louis Vuitton competitor, the proprietary Goyardine fabric is in fact more durable, waterproof and—considering Goyard is only "officially" sold in boutiques—rarer. Lined with leather and featuring tonal leather straps and details, the Boeing 55 may not be as easily recognizable as the Louis Vuitton keepall, but is undoubtedly more unique and, to the right crowd, more impressive. If you know, you know.

Supreme was always so much more than a skate brand. The preeminent streetwear label began releasing an extensive line of luggage years ago, often collaborating with the likes of The North Face or even Louis Vuitton to do so. From shoulder bags to backpacks and even carry-ons, the New York based juggernaut epitomizes the idea of a “lifestyle” brand, filling every niche possible in the male wardrobe.

Of course, that also means creating duffles. Supreme pretty much drops a duffle or two in a variety of colorways each and every season—one in canvas and another in a rotating material, usually nylon or leather. While the options are too numerous to count, if we were to recommend one, it would not doubt be rare “leopard” duffle from the Spring/Summer 2010 season.

While the leather is certainly more durable and many of the collabs ostensibly more covetable, given the current fashion climate and obsession with bold prints, the decade-old bag feels increasingly prescient—and if current price fluctuation is any indication a wise investment. Made from a coated canvas with black nylon trim and handles, the bag is relatively straightforward, apart from a small Supreme logo on the exterior and obviously loud pattern. Though Supreme now releases a duffle bag nearly every season, back in 2010 it was a much rare occasion, and this leopard rendition stands the test of time. If you can find one in good condition for a decent price, don’t think—buy. It won’t be available for much longer.

Leave it to Patagonia to find a way to create a best in class duffle that’s also made entirely from recycled polyester. While its iconic Black Hole bag has been a core part of the label’s outdoor luggage offering for years, constant innovation and a growing concern for its own environmental impact led Patagonia to design a bag that’s not only environmentally friendly, but weather resistant, highly durable and completely packable. In fact, the entire bag rolls up into its own interior pocket, a Patagonia signature.

Featuring a top zipper for easy access as well as a side pocket and mesh stash pockets inside the lid, the Patagonia duffle offers the sort of versatility and organization that empty cylindrical shaped bags only dream of. With a padded base and removable straps that easily allow you to wear the Black Hole as a backpack, this is exactly the sort of duffle you want on an extended backpacking trip—and pretty much anywhere else. Given the label’s predilection for eccentric colorways, expect loud options. That said, given how much people obsess over the label, perhaps the mandarin orange with contrast blue details and massive brand logo across the center of each bag is a good thing. For a smarter, more sustainable alternative, look no further.

One of the last great American outdoor brands, Filson is the only brand on this list that rivals the great European luggage houses (in terms of age and legacy, that is). Founded in 1897 in Seattle by namesake C.C. Filson, the label began as an outfitter, selling gear to the countless prospectors heading North in hopes of getting rich during the Klondike Gold Rush. Rather than participate, Filson realized he could carve out a niche providing the type of clothing that would protect miners panning for gold in the frigid Alaskan waters. After selling countless waders and blankets, producing his own versions came naturally. While it was the mackinaw wool Cruiser that put Filson on the map back in 1914, today the brand is best known for its celebrated Rugged Twill canvas.

By weaving industrial strength cotton into a 2-ply by 3-ply twill and then adding a slight wax finish, Filson creates an abrasion and water-resistant fabric that’s guaranteed for life—literally. In the case of its best-selling duffle, the fabric arrives in a classic cylindrical shape with reinforced bottom and Bridle leather handles and removable shoulder carrying strap. In terms of details, two interior stow pockets, solid brass hardware and a storm flap over the top closure all ensure that your gear will remain safe no matter the journey. The best part? These bags look incredible once they clock some serious mileage. Take it everywhere, treat it rough. This duffle won’t mind one bit.

For those of you looking for a duffle that doubles as an actual gym bag, look no further than Nike. The juggernaut owns the sportswear space, so naturally has a bag perfectly suited for athletics—the Brasilia. A Nike staple for years, the bag—named after the Brazilian capital—was designed for the traveling athlete, with multiple compartments including a separate bottom storage area specifically for a change of shoes. Made entirely of polyester, the bag is durable, waterproof and designed to take a beating. Featuring dual handles that double as shoulder straps, the Brasilia can be worn either as a backpack or over the shoulder with the detachable strap.

While the bag is relatively pedestrian, the sheer amount of space, pockets and classic athletic styling make the admittedly affordable purchase a no brainer. If you’re looking for an entry-level bag with a multitude of uses, this is the one for you.

As far as luxury houses go, Gucci—at least recently—is almost neglected as far as luggage is concerned. Leave it to current creative director Alessandro Michelle to make the men’s and women’s ready-to-wear so successful that consumers nearly forgot that the house began (like all others in Europe) as a leather manufacturer. While today the maximalist bohemian wares are just as significant as the label’s leather accessories, historically that was far from the case. When Guccio Gucci founded the house in 1920, his primary focus was leather travel and handbags—some of which are, to a certain extent, still in production today. The GG duffle is one such example.

While the bag was originally made of leather, following shortages in Italy during World War II, Gucci—like many competitors—switched to cotton canvas, which—despite the availability of leather—is still the most popular fabric choice. Similarly to Vuitton or Goyard, the Gucci GG duffle is all about style, substance is secondary. A treated cotton canvas features the interlocking “GG” motif in a repeating pattern across the fabric, while tonal leather handles, a removable strap and branded hardware complete the look. While the traditional tan, brown and gold bags are an undeniable classic, modern renditions in matte black leather or the recently released rainbow-hued “Psychedelic” capsule collection. In a convenient 50L size with a hidden interior pocket, this luxury bag not only makes a statement, it’s inherently practical. Our only Tip? Rather than a more garish colorway, stick with the classics. They’re called as much for a reason.
