You all knew it was coming. For those yet to watch The Sopranos in full—which, if so, stop reading and start streaming now—at this point there is no excuse. Since Tony and his family (both literal and figurative) were introduced in 1999, television has not been the same. No show prior combined an all-star cast with a top notch showrunner to produce such aspirational small screen narratives. On a macro level, each Sopranos season is a progression, developing towards an eventual endgame. All the while, individual episodes are so nuanced they could pass as stand-alone films with rich and textured characters with meaningful personal ambitions. Everyone from Tony Soprano’s (James Gandolfini) psychiatrist Dr. Melfi (Lorraine Branco) to his daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) and Uncle is vital, albeit in entirely distinct and specific ways. Yes, ostensibly the show is about the life of a rising New Jersey crime boss and how he navigates his “family,” but in reality it’s so much more than that, weaving in themes ranging from childhood depression to generalized anxiety disorder, existential angst, addiction, survivor’s guilt and so much more. More than simply a mob saga, The Sopranos in many ways is a perfect crystallization of turn of the century East Coast Life. The show is America, and America is The Sopranos.

As far as we’re concerned, there is no argument: The Sopranos is the best television show of all time. Comedy, drama, action, romance, twists, double crosses, non-linear plot, dream sequences—you name it, The Sopranos has done it, and better than anyone prior. The Sopranos went beyond television. Not only did it prove that HBO was more than pay-per-view boxing and Sex and the City, it pushed the boundaries of what you could even show on television. Of course, there’s the stylistic component, with suited mob tropes, knit polo tops and Paulie’s tracksuits galore. But more than that, the show is straight up stylish. There’s a sense of gravitas to every scene. There’s—for lack of a better word—a pervasive vibe—that makes the show literally feel larger than life. With six seasons and 86 episodes, there’s plenty to sink your teeth into. Now break out the pasta, the capicola (read “ga-bah-gool”) and dive in. Even more than a decade later, the show feels just as fresh and riveting. It’s not TV, it’s HBO. The Sopranos proved it.

Let’s face it: How to Make It In America is not a great show. In reality, it’s actually mediocre. Hit-or-miss writing, badly executed and lacking the correct brands and references, the show was less a reflection of downtown New York than a commoditized version of the nightlife personas, restaurants and sneakers that it inspired. Still, it was an honest attempt to capture the hustle required for two New Yorkers to “make it.”

Taking place predominantly in the Lower East Side, the show follows Ben Epstein (Bryan Greenberg) and Cam Calderon (Victor Rasuk), two twenty-somethings who—despite being well connected in the downtown scene never seem to quite piece together an honest living. A chance encounter leads the two best friends to buy a roll of raw indigo denim with the hopes of starting their own jean company, Crisp. In reality, the show is less about streetwear and the clothing industry than personal drama and the duo’s circle of friends struggling to survive in New York, but considering its cult status and formative place in many a young fashion-conscious man's media diet, we would be remiss to no include it.

Cancelled after two seasons, the show never really managed to find its fitting, Still, a recurring role for Kid Cudi—and cameos from Pharrell and Pusha-T—helped cultivate a rabid fanbase. While the individual characters do not dress particularly well themselves (Ben is noted John Varvatos fan…), the spirit of the show was relatively on point. Crisp NYC forever.

Yeah, we get it, "GRaILeD iS FoR MeNs FaShIon." Even still, if you have yet to acquaint yourself with the four most fabulous women in New York City, You're 20 years late to the game. Equal parts dated and groundbreaking, Sex and the City changed the rules of television.

Featuring an all female ensemble cast, the show about dating, careers, housing and, yes, sex, as adult to middle-aged women in New York was revolutionary. Based on Candace Bushnell's book of the same name, the series was a cultural phenomenon, one that made Sarah Jessica Parker a beloved household name. The show's protagonist, Carrie Bradshaw (Parker) is a love and sex journalist, who shamelessly mines her own friends' lives (ethics?) for interesting tidbits on the state of men and women in Manhattan. Bradshaw famously lives well above her means, with numerous maxed out credit cards, crippling debt and more Manolo Blahniks than she could possibly count.

Yes, the show is predominantly geared towards older women and has not aged very gracefully. However, the character development is fantastic, the fashion is iconic—legendary costume designer Patricia Field oversaw the series—and the themes are often still relevant. A time capsule of the early-2000s, Sex and The City show's you HBO's humble beginnings, and is inarguably breakthrough television.

Let’s be clear, Mad Men is a slow burn. AMC’s first real stab at original programming, the show fell under the radar for many when it first debuted in 2007. Over the following seven seasons, however, it quickly became recognized as one of the premier shows not only of the '00s, but of all time.

A period drama, Mad Men focuses on the life of advertising executive Don Draper (Jon Hamm), a successful and respected “Mad” (Madison Avenue) man who, despite a seemingly charming personal and professional life, is not exactly who he seems. While that description may sound cliché, the actual show is anything but. Taking place roughly over the course of a decade (1960-1970), what begins as a classic serial transforms into a commentary on American life, and how individuals of various social and economic strata navigate workplace politics, sexual relations and gender roles.

Though Draper is always the center of the universe, whether or not he is truly a good man is constantly up for debate. The man is a depraved, philandering, misogynistic alcoholic... but a killer salesman. Whether the viewer should sympathize or vilify the man is half the fun. Through the series 8 year run—season 7 was split into two parts similar to The Sopranos and fellow AMC stand out Breaking Bad—the show attempted to deconstruct corporate America and both the opportunity and limitations it places on the individuals within it.

Apart from brilliant acting, wicked sharp writing and downright unforgettable moments—Draper clapping back at Michael Ginsberg in the elevator with the endlessly meme’d “I don’t think about you at all” comes to mind—Mad Men is often regarded as one of the most stylish shows ever. While rewarding period pieces for faithfully mimicking their respective era’s style is often a cop out, in the case of Mad Men, the wardrobe is demonstrably influential. Leaning heavily into "Ivy Style" and classic 1950s-1960s American menswear, the show is largely credited for a renewed interest in skinny and slim suiting. Mad Men not only catapulted Hamm into superstardom, but made him a menswear super star, a regular in GQ’s best dressed lists. Labels ranging from Band of Outsiders to J. Crew would readily admit both Hamm and the show’s influence (the latter even designed a capsule inspired by his character). If you can push through the first three or four hours, Mad Men quickly becomes endlessly entertaining, and as the show progresses towards the ‘70s, the fits only get better.

Let's be clear: Seinfeld is the best sitcom of all time. Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld's “show about nothing” not only redefined what a half-hour comedy could be, it re-wrote the rules of accepted comedy television. No apologies, no regrets was the unofficial Seinfeld motto, and each increasingly ludicrous episode made sure to stick to it. If you have somehow never watched an episode—which, how is that even possible?—the show is simultanously random yet incredibly formulaic, always connecting bits in a fresh yet totally expected way. After a few episodes you can guess where the joke is going, but, somehow that adds to the appeal. It's a puzzle that you're giddy to have figured out, something only Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld are capable of.

More than simply an on-going narrative about four friends living in the city, Seinfeld told New York stories in a novel way, using everything from the 7 train to Steinbrenner’s Yankees as plot devices. While technically filmed in an LA sound stage, no show has ever felt more New York.

Of course, Seinfeld's enigmatic style is well documented. From Elaine's tomboy pant suits and high rise jeans to the various Nike huaraches on Jerry’s feet the show both reflects the time period and predicted the future; it serves as a key inspiration for "normcore" and endless '90s callbacks. Next time you wear a Gore-Tex puffer or a vintage suit, remember you have the core four to thank. With nine seasons and 180 episodes, there's literally countless laughs waiting to be had. Seinfeld and David are literally billionaires now, simply because the show is that good. Oh, yeah, and syndication rights.

British crime thriller Killing Eve is the only show on this list still in production, and for good reason. Aside from the stellar acting from leads Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, the intimate relationship between an MI-5 operative and a serial murderer is one of the most fascinating on-screen dichotomies in years.

While a pseudo-sexual relationship between an intelligence officer and the criminal mastermind she's obsessed with may sound like romance novel fodder, due to excellent writing and direction courtesy of the ingenious Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the show is able to flip the traditional cat-and-mouse narrative on its head. The result is a show where you are never sure if the detective is the hunter or the hunted, and vice-versa with serial killer Villanelle (Comer). Even in desperate moments, you're not quite certain who to trust, which makes the show constantly thrilling.

Stylewise, Villanelle is easily one of the best dressed characters on television, a domineering villain dripped in designer with a penchant for gruesome murder. While based in Britain, the show criss-crosses Europe, offering some incredible stylish backdrops, car chases, gun fights and plenty of Burberry trench coats. With season three just wrapping up, you're just in time to catch up to one of the most exciting new programs on television.
