Released: 2019-2020

1017 Alyx 9SM designer Matthew M. Williams grew up in California, immersed in the skate culture of the late-’90s and early-2000s that Stussy was central to. It stands to reason, then, that Williams would have a certain desire to work with—and attachment to—Stussy at some point in his career. As one of the members of #BEENTRILL#, Williams checked that box off fairly early. (We’ll get to that in a minute.)

He’s continued to foster that relationship in recent years, though. A Fall/Winter 2019 collaboration was small, but featured a classic garment-dyed Stussy logo T-shirt, with Williams’ name written in the brand’s iconic font, as well as a collaborative effort on a ROA boot, with a mud-dipped effect. That was followed up with a Spring/Summer 2020 offering that saw 1017 Alyx 9SM, Stussy and legendary Italian brand Loro Piana team up to create luxurious denim jeans, chore coats and a dress, made from what was dubbed “California cotton”; co-branded graphic pieces rounded out the collection.

Given Williams’ star power and California connection, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this relationship continue in the coming years.

Released: 2015

2015 marked Stussy’s 35th anniversary as a brand, and the 25th anniversary of having a presence in New York City. Considering Stussy’s links to New York’s hip-hop culture in the ’90s and A Tribe Called Quest’s legendary status, it was fitting for the two to team up to celebrate Stussy’s quarter-century in the city.

The expansive collection—which featured T-shirts, caps, bucket hats, hoodies and crewnecks—also served as something of a retrospective on A Tribe Called Quest’s evolution over the years. Photos, illustrations and lyrics adorned the various pieces, drawing on both A Tribe Called Quest’s and Stussy aesthetics to create a collection that was fittingly ‘90s-inspired.

The collection launched through Stussy’s Chapter Store in New York City, with A Tribe Called Quest present for the release.

Released: 2010, 2013

Thanks to the International Stussy Tribe, the brand has deep ties to Japanese street culture and many of its power brokers—a cohort that of course includes NIGO. While the Japanese designer is no longer involved with A Bathing Ape, he was in 2010, when Stussy was celebrating its 30th anniversary. (You’ll notice, throughout this list, that anniversary collaborations are a bit of a theme for Stussy).

2010 brought two A Bathing Ape x Stussy drops. The first, a Spring/Summer 2010 release, was relatively small and saw Stussy’s graphic elements combined with BAPE’s iconic camouflage pattern; the latter, dubbed “Survival of the Fittest” in reference to Stussy’s staying power, released during Fall/Winter 2010 and was considerably larger, with graphic T-shirts, hoodies, accessories, denim and even outerwear.

In 2013, Stussy returned the favor, as the two brands joined forces to celebrate A Bathing Ape’s 20th anniversary with an "ILL COLLABORATION” that featured maximalist graphic T-shirts, camouflage outerwear, three versions of BAPE’s iconic zip-up hoodie and, arguably the apple of collectors’ collective eye, a varsity jacket.

Released: 2012

You could argue that the groundwork for Stussy’s collaborations with Matthew M. Williams and Virgil Abloh was laid in 2012, when the brand collaborated with #BEENTRILL#. The collective was mainly composed of Williams, Abloh, Heron Preston, YWP and Justin R. Saunders, with a handful of others tangentially-related on either the musical or clothing front. What started as a bit of an inside joke among friends evolved into one of the hottest brands in the early-2010s.

One of #BEENTRILL#’s biggest breaks came in the form of the 2012 Stussy collaboration. The collection featured T-shirts, tank tops, hoodies and caps; the graphics included a take on Stussy’s 8-ball, as well as a World Tour design that called out the hometowns of #BEENTRILL#’s quintet.

In retrospect, the collaboration offers a snapshot of one of the most important—and curious—moments in modern streetwear.

Released: 1992*, 2015, 2019

(This one comes with a bit of a caveat. In 1992, Stussy teamed up with Carhartt, the Detroit-based workwear brand, to create a staff jacket for Tommy Boy Records. 800 jackets were produced and gifted to “taste makers and people seen in all the right places.” Given their limited nature, the jackets would become veritable collectors’ items over the years.)

Stussy and Carhartt share history beyond the Tommy Boy jacket, with both among the most popular, influential and iconic brands in streetwear’s history. In Fall/Winter 2015, Stussy joined forces with Carhartt WIP, the European offshoot that specializes in workwear with a cultural bend, to create a relatively understated, co-branded capsule. While the clothes were simple, the combination of the iconic handwriting and “C” logo was more than enough to move the needle.

That was followed up with a two-pronged Spring/Summer 2019 Stussy x Carhartt WIP x Dover Street Market collection that riffed more clearly on the Tommy Boy connection, with Carhartt workwear embroidered with stylized Stussy graphics that called out Dover Street Market. The first drop came in January, in the form of a Detroit Jacket, limited to a run of 100 jackets, while the overalls and vest followed in July.

Released: 2015-2020

(Again, this comes with a bit of a caveat in that we’re including Dover Street Market—a key component of the Comme des Garçons universe—collaborations.)

Since 2015, an anniversary year, Stussy has repeatedly and routinely offered co-branded goods with Dover Street Market. They’ve taken the form of simple Tour T-shirts, reissued graphic T-shirts from Stussy’s archives, as well as cut-and-sewn pieces to mark the 35th anniversary.

Before 2020, Stussy had worked with Comme des Garçons on a more informal level, with co-branded commemorative T-shirts sold at Dover Street Market locations, or as thank you gifts for shoppers in Comme des Garçons stores. Dover Street Market has consistently served as an upmarket retail location for special drops—especially when it comes to designer collaborations.

In 2020, though, Comme des Garçons has played a crucial role in celebrating Stussy’s anniversary. A co-branded varsity jacket was the first piece to celebrate Stussy’s 40th year, when it debuted in January 2020. For Fall/Winter 2020, the two brands presented a more expansive collection, with graphic T-shirts, a pinstriped ensemble, and an olive MA-1 jacket.

It’s a rather curious pairing on the surface, but there’s a mutual appreciation between the brands that underscores the importance and influence of both, beyond their initial niches.

Released: 2011-2017

When it comes to Stussy’s footwear collaborations, most tend to focus on Nike. Often overlooked, though, are Stussy’s collaborations with Converse—which also happens to be owned by Nike Inc.

In 2011, Stussy introduced two simple takes on the CX-Pro Ox, in white and navy blue, which were sold through the brand’s Chapter Stores. In the years that followed, Stussy x Converse releases became commonplace. Some, like the patchwork Pro Leather from Fall/Winter 2012, or the camouflage Elm LS from Spring/Summer 2012, didn’t resonate as much as others, like the patterned Chuck Taylor All Stars from Fall/Winter 2015 that celebrated the brand’s 35th anniversary.

The most famous release came in 2016, with a trio of plush suede One Stars, featuring Stussy’s dice, 8-ball and crown graphics embroidered on the tongues, with printed insoles. Since then, Stussy and Converse have been quiet, with the exception being a 2017 Japanese-exclusive release celebrating 100 years of the Chuck Taylor.

Released: 2009-2011, 2015, 2018

Sandwiched between its collaborations with Carhartt WIP, Stussy released a Fall/Winter 2018 “International Workgear” collection in collaboration with Dickies, another heavy-hitter in the workwear world. The collection featured Dickies’ classic Work Pants and Eisenhower jacket, which were finished with contrast stitching, alongside a belt, graphic T-shirts and a hoodie. The T-shirts and hoodie featured classic Stussy graphics reworked using the visual language of "‘50s workwear art.”

It’s worth noting that the timing roughly corresponds with Dickies moving beyond the workwear realm and focusing ever so slightly on a fashionable lifestyle offering. That’s not to say that Stussy is solely responsible—but the brand definitely played a role.

Stussy and Dickies had worked together long before that, though. Since 2009, when they unveiled a series of co-branded pants, the two American brands repeatedly teamed up, collaborating on everything from work jackets and hoodies to sturdy, embroidered shirts and shorts. The collaborative relationship was particularly fruitful in the early parts of the 2010s and even saw an illustrated lookbook for Spring/Summer 2011.

Unfortunately, the hiatus from 2011 to 2015 and then from 2015 to 2018 has led many to forget about the two brands’ shared history.

Released: 2020

(As a caveat, it’s worth noting that this is not a collaboration with Stussy "the brand". Rather, this partnership is between Dior and Shawn Stussy, "the person". Shawn Stussy stepped away from Stussy, "the brand" in 1996. Even though the brand bears his name and several aspects of his graphic style, they’re not inherently one-and-the-same. It honestly felt wrong not to include this collaboration in a retrospective like this—so here we are.)

Leave it to the man who brought Supreme to Louis Vuitton to merge the worlds of Stussy and Dior.

Under the reign of Kim Jones, any luxury brand is bound to see a little bit of streetwear find its way into the runway offering. Jones tapped Stussy (the man) to redesign the Dior logo, offering various mock ups collectively known as the “wave print.” Stussy would also add his graphic style to the Dior Bee—a small sigil of the french fashion house since the days of its eponymous founder.

Stussy’s touches would find their way onto several pieces, becoming a focal point of the Pre-Fall 2020 men’s collection, shown in Miami. Colorful hoodies, sweaters, tees and polos would all bear this print in one iteration or another, but it was the Dior signatures—including the collaboration Saddle Bag and Oblique Sneaker (the one that looks like a luxury Chuck Taylor, for those playing along at home)—that truly embodied the partnership from a product perspective.

Released: 2009-2019

In similar fashion, many remember some of the recent collaborations between Stussy and Dr. Martens, while forgetting that their relationship stretches back a decade. From Spring/Summer 2009 through Fall/Winter 2012, the duo’s collaborative efforts were relatively tame and straight-forward, hewing to the more classic trends of the time. Think beige, grey, black and blue suede versions of the Desert, Hambleton and Brighton boots—options that would pair well with raw denim or chinos.

Then, like with Dickies, Stussy took a break from working with Dr. Martens. The two returned in Fall/Winter 2016 with two colorways of the classic 1460 boot, which featured pebbled leather and cheetah print hair panels, as well as a black version of the Bailey Creeper with a cheetah print toe. It was an offering that skewed a little more punk and was inarguably more interesting than previous drops.

That continued in 2018, when the brands released a number of takes on the chunky Penton loafer, in classic leather, croc leather, and a London-exclusive Zebra print. The most recent release saw the brands tone things down again, with the rugged 8053 HY being offered for Fall/Winter 2019.

Released: 2011-2015

One of the most important members of the so-called International Stussy Tribe is Hiroshi Fujiwara. Fujiwara was crucial to Stussy gaining traction in Japan and has always had a close relationship with Stussy’s braintrust.

In 2011, Fujiwara’s Fragment Design teamed up with Stussy to create a co-branded and slightly tweaked version of Stussy’s Tour T-shirt to raise money in the wake of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The following year, for Fall/Winter 2012, the two brands released a trio of pinstriped varsity jackets as part of the International Stussy Tribe series. In 2014, Stussy helped Fujiwara commemorate both his Café Tour with Ino Hidefumi, as well as the opening of an installation at the POOL aoyama, with graphic-heavy basics.

The following year, Fujiwara and Fragment Design helped celebrate Stussy’s 35th anniversary with a capsule collection featuring MA-1 bombers, hoodies, graphic T-shirts, button-down collar shirts, a patterned pocket T-shirt and ripstop bucket hats.

Released: 2006-2011

In 2006, Stussy reimagined its Tour T-shirt graphic, by asking artists from around the world to put their own spin on it. Futura was one of those artists and it spawned a relationship that saw Stussy go on to work with the celebrated artist—and his Futura Laboratories brand—on a number of occasions throughout the late ‘00s and early 2010s. It’s worth pointing out that, also in 2006, Futura designed limited-edition T-shirts for the opening of Stussy’s Fukuoka Chapter Store.

Graphic T-shirts figure prominently in the duo’s archive, with many commemorating anniversaries and openings—like a Fall/Winter 2008 release celebrating Futura Laboratories’ 10th anniversary—but there’s a healthy mix of tech-packed outerwear, like a nylon jacket from Spring/Summer 2009 and a reversible vest from Fall/Winter 2009.

Spring/Summer 2011 saw the duo release their widest offering, with the “Johnny” collection. Sadly, things petered out from there, with only a Fall/Winter 2011 release commemorating the Futura Lab Shop’s reopening having been released since.

Released: 1997, 2005-2016

No watch is more synonymous with streetwear’s first golden era—the turn of the millennium and early aughts—than the G-Shock. Developed by Japanese electronics giant Casio, the bulky G-Shock, in its myriad colors, became a watch to be matched with sneakers, caps and graphic T-shirts.

The very first Stussy G-Shock was introduced in 1997, taking the form of a DW-6900, with a Stussy engraving on the back, as well as the brand’s iconic Double-S logo appearing when the watch face was lit up. Subsequent collaborations in 2005, 2010 and 2015 helped mark various anniversaries for the California brand, but collaborations between G-Shock and Stussy were an almost-yearly affair from 2005 to 2016. Over the years, the two brands have combined to reimagine a number of classic G-Shock timepieces, from the DW-6900 and DW-5600 to the DW-001 and Frogman—there was even co-branded clothing released in 2015 to celebrate the 35th anniversary!

Released: 2014

As part of its artist’s series, Stussy tapped the legendary Hajime Sorayama for a small capsule collection in Spring/Summer 2014.

Known for his hyperreal illustrations and sculptures of robot pinups and erotica—and also dinosaurs and animals, but he’s not as famous for those—Sorayama created four graphic T-shirts for Stussy.

Rather predictably, these have gone on to be among the most collectible Stussy T-shirts on the second-hand market.

Released: 2012, 2015

(Again, a caveat: Kiko Kostadinov’s first batch of recut and resewn Stussy goods weren’t commissioned by Stussy and weren’t necessarily available. The designer—then a Central Saint Martins student—was commissioned by Stephen Mann and Michael Kopelman to create unique Stussy garments for a "Gimme5" editorial. So intriguing were Kostadinov’s designs that they eventually led to an exhibit and capsule collection, entitled “Displacement”, at "SHOWStudio." The 2012 designs, which were extremely limited, became some of the most sought-after pieces for collectors—remember, at the time, Kostadinov was an unknown figure in the industry).

In 2015, as part of the effort to mark 35 years, Stussy officially tapped Kostadinov to create a unique 20-piece collection that was available through Dover Street Market and MACHINE-A—again, in exceedingly limited quantities.

Kostadinov’s Stussy work is defined by destroying various garments to recreate new ones, using mismatched, asymmetrical pieces, sometimes from shirts of different sizes. The product is, simply put, stunning. Kostadinov was originally inspired by the idea of destroying the brand’s logo—to try and rework it so much that it would become unrecognizable. But, in his eyes, his work “proved that after 35 years, Stussy’s legacy is still unshakeable no matter how many different ways you try to tear up the emblem.”

It remains to be seen whether he’ll try again after 40 or 50 years.

Released: 2005-2011

Levi’s and Stussy may have only collaborated for six years, but there’s a considerable amount of product that came out of the short-lived relationship.

Stussy and Levi’s released a 25th anniversary capsule collection in 2005 that included co-branded selvedge denim with unique detailing, as well as a special edition T-shirt that featured a denim-clad skull and denim flowers. That was followed with a Fall/Winter 2007 collaboration featuring raw and washed denim, a T-shirt with a denim version of Stussy’s crown graphic and a raw denim coach jacket.

As the 2000s bled into the 2010s, the relationship continued to grow, with the brands linking up to create shorts, more jeans, chambray work shirts and much more. In 2010, a 30th anniversary collection was released, featuring distressed 501s with patches, paint stains and Stussy-style scribbles; in Japan, a similar version of the 502 was released by the brands, though the patches were more colorful. The following year, for Fall/Winter 2011 the duo released the “Blue Sundries” collection, which featured contrast stitching on some of Levi’s most iconic pieces.

Since then, all's been quiet on the Levi’s x Stussy front.

Released: 2020

To celebrate the brand’s 40th anniversary, Stussy turned to a handful of well-respected designers from around the world to reimagine the brand’s Tour T-shirt. You’ll recall that in 2006, Stussy asked a number of artists to do the same—this year’s commemorative T-shirts are an homage to that.

Marc Jacobs may not be a designer many associate with Stussy, but the American designer’s penchant for playful motifs actually fits quite nicely with Stussy.

Jacobs’ take on the Tour T-shirt sees his own handwriting sit next to Stussy’s, with the cities rearranged around what is, ostensibly, a globe, with a smiling flower in the middle. It’s both very Marc Jacobs and very Stussy, which underscores the fact that the two have more in common than one might think.

Released: 2020

Also linking up with Stussy to mark 40 years is London-based designer Martine Rose. Unlike Marc Jacobs, Martine Rose probably feels like a more natural fit to work with Stussy, as the designer is well-known for her ability to recreate well-known graphics using her name and logo—something that Stussy is familiar with.

Rose’s take on the Tour T-shirt looks like an otherwise normal Stussy T-shirt, save for the addition of a yellow oval that appears on both the front and back, with Martine Rose’s logo, a red triangle and the words “Expect Perfection”, a detail that features throughout Rose’s non-Stussy work.

Released: 2013, 2015

When Stussy and Mastermind Japan first teamed up, it came at a rather curious time: in 2013, just as Mastermind Japan was celebrating 15 years as a force in streetwear, the brand announced that it would be shuttering its operation. The broad, multi-drop collection with Stussy was thus both celebratory—for the 15th anniversary—and a way for Mastermind Japan to end on a high note.

The Spring/Summer 2013 collection featured everything from co-branded graphic pieces, which used various elements from each brand’s visual language, to denim, embroidered button-down collar shirts and luxurious varsity jackets. Given Mastermind Japan’s apparent demise, the collection took on a legendary status, of sorts.

Then, in 2015, after having laid low, Mastermind Japan returned with another Stussy collaboration, this time also tapping Loopwheeler. The resulting capsule collection, though small, was well-received and would mark Mastermind Japan’s re-emergence as a collaborative force.

Released: 2008, 2010

Neighborhood and Stussy linked up in 2008 to create the Boneyards collection, inspired by a secret surf spot in San Pedro, California, and the convergence of local biker and punk cultures. The Spring/Summer 2008 offering included dozens of pieces ranging from graphic and baseball T-shirts to chinos and accessories, though the collection is likely best remembered for the two Neighborhood x Stussy x Nike models, a Blazer and Terminator.

The collaboration was revived in Fall/Winter 2010, with Boneyards II, another expansive offering that included graphic T-shirts, jackets, denim and accessories—notably, there was no follow-up Nike collaboration.

Released: 2003-2017

Stussy’s off-white take on New Balance’s 990v4 was one of the most sought-after releases of 2017 and helped propel the dad sneaker to new heights—or at least, kept it on its trajectory.

What makes this collaboration interesting in the grand scheme of things is that Stussy’s logo only features on the insole—and even then, it’s the Double-S version, not the signature logo. For a brand whose logo is so famous—remember what Kiko Kostadinov said about it?—and important within its collaborative archive, the 990v4 stands out. It’s almost like the brand was challenging itself to avoid its logo.

Stussy was working with New Balance long before that, though, with the two joining forces repeatedly in the 2000s and 2010s, often with third and fourth parties like Undefeated, Mita, MasterPiece and Hectic. The very first release was a brown and beige MT580 signed Stussy x Hectic x New Balance and emblazoned with “MAD Stussy” on the heel. Released in 2003, the shoe was only available in Japan. Later releases were, however, available worldwide.

Released: 2000-current

There could be an entire article dedicated solely to Stussy’s collaborations with Nike.

What started in 2000 with two colorways of the Air Huarache LE has evolved into one of the most important and influential collaborative partnerships in streetwear. The 2000s were particularly fruitful, with Stussy putting its touch on nearly a dozen different Nike silhouettes, ranging from the familiar Blazer and Dunk to the forgotten Free Trail 5.0 and All Court Mid XXX. The 2005 Dunk Low SB with a pink and brown upper (known better as the “Cherry” SB Dunk) is one of the most well-known SBs—and one of the most highly-sought by collectors.

The early 2010s saw Nike and Stussy maintain a frenzied pace, with Sky Force 88 Mids, Mogan 2s, Lunar Braata Mids, and Trainerendor Lows. None of those collaborations are particularly memorable. In 2015, however, as Stussy was celebrating its 25th anniversary, the duo put out a trio of Air Max 95s—it was also the silhouette’s 25th anniversary—with a neoprene tongue that referenced the one used on the 2000 Huarache LE. Since then, the brands have taken a more careful and methodical approach. Blazers were released in 2018, celebrating Kevin Terpening and Lance Mountain.

If Nike and Stussy laid low from 2015 until 2018 and then from 2018 until 2020, they’ve more than made up for it in 2020, with a number of well-received collaborative releases that included a Zoom Spiridon Cage 2, Benassi slides, the Zoom Spiridon Kukini, clothing and two pairs of hemp Air Force 1s, which are set to close out 2020.

Released: 2020

“No Vacancy Inn wholly embodies the spirit and vibe of Stussy.” And that’s coming from Stussy. No Vacancy Inn is the product of collaboration between Tremaine Emory, Ade “Acyde” Odunlami and Brock Korsan, existing at the intersection of music, art and fashion. So, yeah, that’s pretty much what Stussy is about.

Released for Fall/Winter 2020, the No Vacancy Inn x Stussy collection was modelled by A$AP Nast and inspired by a bon vivant approach to life. The collection featured a corduroy suit—the standout piece from the collection—as well as logo fleece pieces, a packable trench coat, and a tie-dye accented sweater.

Released: 2020

Sweden and California don’t have much in common—especially not the weather—but that didn’t stop Stussy from teaming up with Our Legacy to create one of 2020’s most celebrated collaborations. Collaboration has become something of a lost art in recent years—a byproduct of there just being so much of it—but Stussy has largely approached things the right way, and that was definitely the case with Our Legacy.

Rather than simply relying on combining graphic elements of the two brands, Our Legacy and Stussy undertook something far more interesting: using Our Legacy’s Work Shop know-how to take vintage Stussy fabrics from the ’90s and ’00s to create new garments that were “familiar and fun, irregular and comfortable.” While the relaxed tailoring, shirting and other cut and sewn pieces stole the limelight, there were, of course, graphic pieces featuring elements from both brands’ archives.

It was a wide-ranging collaboration that, while not officially linked to Stussy’s 40th anniversary, set the tone for what was to come later in 2020.

Released: 2010-2012

Dutch artist Parra is well-known—and well-respected—in streetwear circles, whether for his art, work with fellow Dutchmen at Patta or his now-defunct cult label Rockwell. He’s also been a frequent collaborator for some of the biggest names in streetwear, including, of course, Stussy.

Parra was first tapped by Stussy for the brand’s 30th anniversary, creating a graphic T-shirt using his trademark handwriting that paid tribute to Stussy’s European pieds-à-terre. In 2011, Parra and Stussy linked up once again, this time to help celebrate KICKS/HI’s 10th anniversary. Finally, in 2012, Parra and Stussy put out a four-piece capsule collection, as part of Stussy’s then-ongoing artist’s series.

Released: 2020

Rick Owens was another designer tapped to celebrate Stussy’s 40th anniversary and while the designer is ostensibly representing Paris, it’s much more fitting to look at this collaboration through a sunnier lens, as both Owens and Stussy have roots in California.

Owens’ take on the Tour T-shirt is—well—Owensian, with a photo of Michèle Lamy’s mouth adding to the oversized Stussy logo and tonal city names, while the back features Owens’ signature. What really made waves, if you’ll pardon the pun, was the photo of Owens, dripping wet, wearing the collaborative T-shirt—we want to say there’s something there about California, surfing and the ocean.

Another example of Stussy’s privileged relationship with some of Japan’s most storied brands is a double collaboration with Sophnet. in 2015.

Both collections celebrated anniversaries, with a Spring/Summer 2015 capsule geared more towards Stussy’s 35th anniversary and a Fall/Winter 2015 capsule commemorating Sophnet.’s 16th anniversary—which, let’s be honest, is a bit of a random one to celebrate. Between the two capsules, there was a healthy offering of co-branded pieces, ranging from graphic T-shirts and fleece to varsity and coach jackets.

Released: 2010

Supreme and Stussy go back—way back to the days of Union’s original New York outpost. Supreme founder James Jebbia has never been shy about the influence that Stussy had on him, and without Stussy—and the NYC outpost that Jebbia opened with Stussy in 1991—one wonders if there would even be a Supreme.

When it came time for Stussy to celebrate its 30th anniversary, in 2010, the brand turned to Supreme, among others. Jebbia and the Supreme design team revisited the Stussy archives, riffing on an old “Skate Tough” graphic from the ’80s, with Stussy’s logo on the front chest and Supreme’s red box logo on the lower back.

As one would expect, the limited nature of the T-shirt—it was produced in limited quantities and only ever available through Stussy Chapter Stores—and the stature of both Stussy and Supreme make this collaboration a piece of streetwear history.

Representing Tokyo for the 40th anniversary Tour T-shirt is celebrated designer Takahiro Miyashita, of Number(N)ine and Takahiro Miyashita TheSoloist. fame.

Miyashita has long favored using text on his garments, which fits well with the concept of the Tour T-shirt. Predictably, Miyashita approached this project with a subversive edge, referencing the original World Tour graphic—which mentions street culture hotspots like Venice, Brooklyn and Santa Ana in addition to the global “fashion cities”—as well as various Stussy logos. Miyashita’s graphics were then applied as if the T-shirt got jammed in a printer, with the old school graphic on the top and more modern one on bottom half, with the back printed upside down.

Released: As early as 2006

Charting the extent of the relationship between Undefeated and Stussy is almost impossible. Eddie Cruz, for example, is a partner in both Undefeated and Stussy’s Los Angeles Chapter Store—he and James Bond, his Undefeated partner, are arguably key members of the so-called International Stussy Tribe.

That being said, the brands were working together in an official, co-branded capacity at least as early as 2006, when they released a Japanese-exclusive T-shirt. Since then, there have been dozens of graphic-heavy pieces that incorporated both brands’ visual language and often commemorated a store opening or anniversary. The Californian duo also repeatedly teamed up with New Balance and Hectic in the late aughts and early 2010s—most notably on a pair inspired by Full Metal Jacket—as well as with The North Face, in 2012.

The most stunning development, though, is that the brands haven’t really worked together since the early-to-mid 2010s.

Released: 2005-2017

It would have been strange for Stussy and Vans to have never worked together. And while they have, it’s at least a little bit strange that they haven’t done so with more regularity.

The two California-born brands first teamed up in 2005, as Stussy was celebrating its 25th anniversary, with two pairs of Sk8-His featuring an oversized, minimal paisley pattern developed by Stussy in the ’80s. Each shoe was limited to 1000 pairs. Five years later, the two brands linked up again, with two more pairs of Sk8-His, again in olive and black. In 2012, they launched a pair of Eras inspired by the record label Alakazam and, in 2013, they commemorated the Year of the Snake with a Sk8-Hi.

In 2014, Stussy began working with Vault by Vans, releasing a three shoe capsule that saw classic Stussy graphics—the Tom Tom pattern, Bones print and 8-ball—applied to three classic Vans silhouettes, in the form of the Era, Style 36 and Sk8-Hi. Finally, in 2017, the duo released a six-shoe collaboration with a decidedly Californian vibe thanks to pastel blues and pinks, and the presence of the vastly-underrated Chukka.

Who else but Virgil Abloh to round out Stussy’s 40th anniversary World Tour capsule? The Chicago-raised, Paris-based designer is, curiously, representing Los Angeles for this series, but considering the amount of time that Abloh has likely spent at LAX, it kind of makes sense.

Abloh’s design actually doesn’t feature Stussy’s World Tour graphic, but instead features classic Off-White visual elements on the back, and Stussy’s sphinx graphic on the front with the slogan “I Support Young Black Businesses”. The slogan has been a recurring element for Abloh in 2020, debuting at his January 2020 runway show and then emerging as a fundraising initiative later in the year. Fittingly, a portion of the profits from all of the 40th anniversary World Tour shirts will be donated to organizations chosen by each designer.

Released: 1990s-2006

This one is for the old heads, with WTAPS and Stussy having worked together since the ’90s, a time before the internet, making it hard to pin down exactly when a certain graphic T-shirt dropped. Uncertainty aside, there were definitely co-branded pieces in the ’90s, bearing WTAPS' classic “Visual Uparmored” slogan on the sleeve and stylized Stussy graphics on the chest.

In 2006, the two brands combined for a World Tour T-shirt, a reversible nylon vest, as well as an M-65 jacket that featured tiny embroidered versions of Stussy’s skull icon and a skull and bones graphic on the back.

Having been one of Stussy’s first collaborators—and a relatively famous one at that—it’s curious that WTAPS hasn’t been...well, tapped, again in the decade and a half since the two brands last worked together. Though, perhaps there’s something to glean from Stussy and WTAPS’ restraint: if collaborating became a yearly occurrence, would the pieces from the ’90s and 2000s be as highly-regarded today? Perhaps less is actually more.
