Earlier this month, LVMH announced that Chloé’s Clare Waight Keller would be the first ever female artistic director at Givenchy. Keller’s spent the last six years reinventing and reintroducing the Chloé Girl through a celebration of the brand’s girlish bohemian spirit–think breezy chiffons, sheer layered frills, satin neckties and all-around good '70s vibes. She continuously explored the relationship between nonchalant femininity and sensible boyishness, a look that's since been unceasingly emulated by countless fast-fashion imitations. Alongside the Chloé Girls, Keller transformed the brand into its own genre of style, one that both empowers women and cherishes all of our effortless charm.

Her new appointment at Givenchy will see Keller expanding beyond women’s ready-to-wear into uncharted territory as this will be her first venture into the world of haute couture and menswear, ultimately resulting in at least eight shows per year. This is quite the influx of work, no doubt, but with 65 years of history to draw inspiration from, the higher-ups at Givenchy are clearly excited to see what Keller’s proven elegance has to offer and so are we.

With Keller stepping in, Riccardo Tisci’s departure cannot go unmentioned. Tisci single-handedly made Givenchy one of LVMH’s most successful brands. If you’ve opened your Instagram feed at all within the past few years, this should be quite obvious. Givenchy amassed a wide, one-of-a-kind cultural relevance under Tisci’s tenure, and his predominantly dark and aggressive aesthetic took Givenchy from a place of uncertain chaos to pillar of pop culture. Let’s face it, there’s only one man on earth who can take credit for Kim Kardashian’s wedding dress.

So what can we hope to expect from Givenchy moving forward? Keller’s work in womenswear is roughly cut out for her, but I would expect less Rottweiler’s, more Hepburn-era sophistication and just as many ruffles. For menswear, Keller’s Calvin Klein and Gucci days will undoubtedly come in handy as will that massive archive, though Givenchy's menswear and Keller's work at Chloé are completely dissonant. If you’re still riding that gothic wave, we recommend grabbing a Tisci-designed graphic tee now before it’s too late.

As for Tisci’s future plans? Rumor has it he’s headed back to the homeland after signing with Versace as Donatella’s right hand man and will be taking the reigns for Versus Versace moving forward. Nothing is confirmed just yet, but his recent #italiansdoitbetter posting spree on Instagram has definitely piqued our interest.
