My Own Private Idaho is a cult classic film and one of the best from director Gus Van Sant. The film stars a young Keanu Reeves and the late River Phoenix and is notable for its memorable story and impeccable costume design.

Number (N)ine designer Takahiro Miyashita titled his Fall 2008 collection "My Own Private Portland" as a direct reference to the film. The collection itself merges 90s grunge style with the type of vintage American garments featured in the film. Looking through the collection one can find exact replicas of garments worn in the film, including shearling-lined coats and patterned western shirts. Miyashita's attention to detail is impeccable and pieces from F/W 08 are still highly sought after to this day.

Stanley Kubrick is widely lauded as one of the greatest film directors of all time. One of his most controversial works, A Clockwork Orange, was the source of inspiration for Sacai Spring/Summer 2017. The collection was the first menswear collection from designer Chitose Abe to walk down the Paris runway and there were plenty of direct nods to the film, including the low-pulled bowler style hats and T-shirts printed with phrases like "horrorshow" that reference the film's dialogue.

Sci-fi classic Gattaca was the inspiration for Dior Homme’s Autumn/Winter 2013 collection. A quick look at the collection bears quite a bit of similarity to the costume design of the film itself. The film featured a mixture of minimalist suiting and workwear with a futurist bent and this is true for the collection as well.

A deep dive on the details throughout the collection further reveals the extent of the inspiration: blazers have zips instead of buttons and many of the looks are paired with militaristic belts with metallic buckles. Designer Kris Van Assche did a terrific job translating on-screen sci-fi looks into wearable, real life clothing, a rare feat that speaks to his talents.

Thom Browne’s Spring/Summer 2011 is one of his most memorable punctuated by the inclusion of customized astronaut suits. The show itself was held at the Oscar Neimeyer building in Paris and when Browne saw the space he remarked that it just felt like Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, deciding from there to take the collection in that direction.

Kubrikc's masterpiece is not the only movie to have inspired Thom Browne. The self-proclaimed film buff has been known to reference his favorite movies in much of his work, like Luchino Visconti's Death in Venice and Fritz Lang's Metropolis.

For Junya’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection, he drew inspiration from the look and feel of retro gang members. In particular, Junya looked to the small time hustlers and henchmen in the film Black Cat, White Cat directed by Emir Kusturica. Watanabe took a slightly humorous approach to the styling as looks were purposely meant to be over the top. There was some also some Eastern European flair featured the collection as Watanabe used posters from Polish artist Bronislaw Zelek as a graphic element for several of the looks.

Raf Simons is known for his ability to translate cultural references from music and art into his collections almost seamlessly. For Spring/Summer 2016, much of his influences came from the world of cinema, in particular elements from classic horror films including Scream, Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street. For Raf purists, many of these films will be familiar for having played a large part in also informing his now classic A/W 02 "Virginia Creeper" collection.

Other film references for the collection came from acclaimed director David Lynch. Simons is a huge fan of Lynch's cult classic television series Twin Peaks and even used the voice of composer Angelo Badalamenti as audio during the runway show. The oversized puffer jackets were part of a greater tribute to the American high school style. This was also visible Simons' moth-eaten sweaters decorated with letterman style patches, subverting literally one of the most mundane aspects of American life imaginable. Simons dedicated the collection to Lynch after realizing the show just happened to fall on the director's birthday.

Fall/Winter 2009 the first season of Rick Owens' to grace the Paris runway. The collection showcases all of Rick’s strengths as a menswear designer and remains one of his best to date. Everything from his signature leathers and oversized, asymmetrical coats to drop crotch trousers and innovative puffers were on full display.

The music for the show came directly from the soundtrack of the 1923 film Salomé, which was adapted from the Oscar Wilde play of the same name. Rick Owens has frequented cited some of his favorite filmmakers in interviews, including Satyajit Ray, Cecil B. DeMille and Ken Russell.

Just looking at Undercover's Fall/Winter 2009 "Earmuff Maniac" collection one can see how huge of an influence Star Wars had on the overall aesthetic of the clothing, particularly on the oversized layered looks featuring wool scarves and hooded cloaks that would not look out of place on any Jedi. This blending of the trademark UC punk aesthetic with that of interstellar space travel makes for one of the finest Undercover collections to date. While there are no direct graphical references to Star Wars, designer Jun Takahashi was able to eventually license official Star Wars imagery for the UC 25th anniversary "The Greatest" collection.

Yohji Yamamoto challenged himself by shifting from his trademark oversized aestheticin favor of tight-fitting suits for S/S 16. In an interview regarding this pivot, Yamamoto commented, "Very interesting and challenging. Because if you do not do it seriously, it can only look businessman. But these are not businessmen … 007." To underscore the spy angle and visual inspiration, the show was set to the theme from the original 1962 James Bond movie.

Yamamoto himself is no stranger to film, having done significant design work specifically for movies. Yohji Yamamoto declared himself a "Takeshi Kitano nut" in the mid-90s and later teamed up with the famed Japanese director for the first time in 2000 with Yamamoto designing the costumes for LA-set Yakuza drama Brother. The pair has since collaborated on wardrobe for four other films.
