"In Medias Res" is a column in which photographer Chris Fenimore links up with some of fashion's most interesting people to see what they're wearing throughout the week.
Name: Jacob Keller
Age: 24
Occupation: Manager and Buyer at Machus.
Neighborhood: North and Northeast Portland.
Favorite shop in Portland: Machus, of course. I was a heavy customer for years before I got brought onto the team. I also love Una, which is an all women’s boutique a few blocks east of us. You can find some really unique unisex jewelry.
Favorite restaurant in Portland: Man, well, Portland just got rated the number one food city in America I think, right? So it’s really hard to narrow down to one. My favorite at the moment would probably be Tasty n Sons. Their happy hour is killer.
How did you get into fashion: All throughout grade school and high school, I never cared about what I was wearing. Old Navy and Marshall’s were the go-to spots for me. Safe to say, I was pretty late to the game. I first got into clothing in 2011 (freshman year of college). I checked PLNDR and Karmaloop three times a day, every day. Streetwear really gave me a sense of belonging—it was cool to see all these dudes know and wear the same brands that I was super into. That was definitely the start.
How would you describe your personal style: I tend to buy items that I can do all my daily work things in, but then also be able to head to a fancy dinner across town in that same outfit. I think versatility, comfort and function are important in every wardrobe. I’ve been a fan of skinny jeans for years now, but find myself gravitating to more of a baggy, drop crotch pant just because I can move and breathe easier throughout the day. I never want to let out a deep sigh when I take my clothes off at night. That means your shit is just too uncomfortable.
Current favorite piece(s) in your closet: My Rick Owens Basket Swinger Trousers, my basic Stone Island fitted sweater and my Costco brand white Kirkland tees (6 for $18 - don’t tell me you can’t find steals). Oh, and my Second/Layer Suede Perfecto (thanks Josh and Jacob).
How long have you been using Grailed: For over 2 years. Once I found out about the site, half my wardrobe was gone, but then replaced by things I found on the site. The site was seriously a genius idea. There is nowhere in Portland to get compensated for your “higher fashion” clothing so Grailed really came at an amazing time. 290+ sold grails later and I’m still using the site every day.
Most memorable Grailed come up: It’s gotta be my Margiela Washed Bomber that I’m wearing in my first fit. I bought it around a year and a half ago for $400 and that was a lot of money for me at the time. Now people are offering me $1.2K for it. Crazy. Also my Vans x Engineered Garments slip ons. Love them.
Favorite fashion designers: As per my pictures, I definitely rock some Rick and Margiela and Gosha and big name guys, but I also love supporting smaller guys: Death to Tennis, Chapter, Second/Layer, ALYX, Willy Chavarria, Drôle de Monsieur and Henrik Vibskov to name a few. Mixing and matching the popular brands with the smaller names is something I love doing.
Ultimate grail: This is hard because I am so impulsive that if I REALLY want something I just end up copping because I fear that I might never be able to get it again. But right now I’m just in the market for some black/white Ramones lows. If anyone has a 41, please hit me up. The 41 I had in my Grails/fitting room sold a week ago :-(.
