The fashion industry has long nourished itself on the fruits of other creative pursuits, be it through taking inspiration or by inciting direct collaboration. The lines distinguishing fashion from art have long been smudged, and the overlap of music with fashion is nearing eclipse. The imprint of literature and poetry is more subtle, but not less influential.
A garment can easily become a sculpture through materials and construction, and a designer can pay homage to a musician or a genre by encapsulating emotion, attitude, or style. But how might a novel take shape as a collection without the designer resorting to costume design? How can a poem live on a piece as something beyond a graphic print? Designers have reinterpreted such works in innovative ways, whether it is by employing poetry in the show’s environmental design or capturing the spirit of an entire literary movement in a single season.
