Are Lucie and Luke Meier Fashion Design's Next Superstars?

Up until a couple years ago, I had no idea who Luke Meier was, by name at least. But one beautifully crafted navy blue topcoat made of bonded wool hanging on a rack at Barneys would soon reveal a creative force who’s work I was already familiar with.
A relatively quiet voice in the fashion industry, having only revealed himself in a handful of interviews over the past few years, Meier appears to be sound in letting his work speak for him.
Notably serving as creative director of Supreme for eight years, Meier is responsible for many of the Supreme seasons that we fell in love with during the early 2000s. After leaving the brand, Meier began his own label, Overall Master Cloth (now universally know as OAMC), revealing his first collection in 2014. With his background and experience designing for one of the most notorious streetwear brands, Meier has been able to combine his passion and knowledge of quality construction with his understanding of cultural influence in making clothing, a relationship that his past OAMC collections display quite well. Looking at what he’s produced from previous seasons, the unique fits and equally as intriguing graphics create a statement of casual couture where functionality is not forgotten. Canadian-born, with and affinity for exploration and travel, the technical aspects of Meier's OAMC designs distinguish him from his peers.
Recently, Meier and his wife Lucie were appointed as co-creative directors of Jil Sander, a house who’s been led by designers such as Raf Simons and Rodolfo Paglialunga since Sander left, and then briefly returned to, her eponyms label for the final time in 2013. Luke’s wife, Lucie, is also no stranger to the world of high-fashion design. Her pedigree boasts stints at Louis Vuitton, Dior and Balenciaga, working alongside Marc Jacobs, Raf Simons and Nicolas Ghesquière respectively, as a co-creative power.
Given their extensive backgrounds, this appointment to Jil Sander brings expectations of preservation to the house’s historical prestige as well as notions of a complimentary contemporary revival. With years of experience, Luke and Lucie have the knowledge of older veterans coupled with a connection to the current cultural zeitgeist of fashion, a combination that screams longevity.
Rooted in their belief of creating based on personal taste, we can expect great things from the duo, who will debut their first collection this fall, presenting Jil Sander's 2018 resort collection. As the worlds of high-fashion and streetwear continue to merge, the Meiers' latest position could serve as a further affirmation of the current transformations in fashion leadership. So while Luke Meier continues to grow and develop OAMC, we now have something else to look forward to in coming seasons from the wildly talented couple.
