Two months after its debut alongside Fear of God’s Sixth Collection, the Nike Air Fear of God 1 has been formally announced by Nike—including a release date.
While many would expect a Fear of God sneaker to be all fashion-focused flash, the Air Fear of God 1 actually doubles as a performance basketball shoe. The sneaker utilizes a never-before-seen double stack Zoom technology heel along with full-length Zoom and TPU cage to create a shoe that works on and off the court. But don’t let all that Nike technology jargon fool you; this is a Fear of God shoe through and through. The NIke Air Fear of God 1 uses a completely new foundation, acquired by scanning Lorenzo’s own last and focusing on what makes it stand out—notably, the toe box.
“Growing up in the ’80s and finishing high school in the ’90s, contrary to what's happening now, it was our superstar athletes and our pro athletes that were informing the way that we wore our street clothes,” Fear of God founder Jerry Lorenzo explained to Nike, “These athletes, like Agassi and Jordan, were at the top of their game and what they wore didn’t compromise on design or beauty.” Between Lorenzo’s nostalgia and past life as an athlete, it’s clear why he wanted the Air Fear of God 1 to not be confined to the hardwood or sidewalk.
Releasing with the sneakers is a small collection of athletic wear, which consists of jerseys, sweatpants, shorts, tees and jackets featuring Nike, Fear of God and (on a few pieces) NBA branding.
