Just weeks away from the FIFA World Cup, Nike has unveiled two very distinct kits from two of its high fashion collaborators: Kim Jones and Virgil Abloh.
Virgil’s capsule—titled “Football, Mon Amour”—is inspired by his high school days on his school’s soccer team, as well as a very utilitarian couple of dots. “I wanted to communicate where a player strikes the ball. So, I put dots on the boot; if you’re going to strike the ball, your foot/eye coordination is basically the only variance of chance. That's what the collection started with, these running shoes that mimic the same as your actual boot on the pitch so that you started subconsciously training all the time. Then I just applied that aesthetic from the bottom up,” he told Nike. The aforementioned “boot” in question is a Zoom Fly Mercurial Flyknit. The jerseys—all bearing numbers Abloh wore as a player—jacket and goalie gloves also feature the graphic “LOGO" (in case you thought he was taking this too seriously).
Jones' “Football Reimagined” collection, on the other hand, opted for aesthetics over functionality, and focused on making the most tailored kit. Inspired by 1970’s London punk—one of Jones’ favorite subcultures—Jones goal was to take performance pieces and change their proportions to something that would have better suited the time. “That whole punk era was all about proportions that gave power to the wearer. I was inspired by the idea of DIY of the time—cutting up and putting things back together—to create something new,” says Jones. Jones’ sneaker, which has yet to be named, also carries this punk mindstate in execution. Combining elements from three of his favorite Nike models—the Footscape, the Vandal and Air Max 97—and applying them onto a Mercurial silhouette, in Jones words, is “an homage to punk, but with a super-slick end product.”
