Back in 1994 when Nike reissued—or “retro”-d— Air Jordans for the first time, it unknowingly created a titanic shift in how we approach buying sneakers. Now when you miss out on a release, you often get another crack at them down the line. Today, retros represent an enormous segment of sneaker sales. Jordan Brand’s biggest releases every year are retro models from back in MJ’s heyday.

An alternative to simply rereleasing older yet still sought after designs is to reinterpret them via a new, more technologically up-to-date silhouette. Some designs you thought were relics return, albeit in a different form. Two of the sneakers on this week’s list–the SB Dunk “Raygun” and the Air Max 90 “Curry”–are prime examples of that idea. The Currys listed below are inspired by the classic Air Max 90 design, while the OG Rayguns are the inverse, sneakers that last year were reimagined onto the Kyrie 3. In both instances, a classic receives its due respect while acting as a springboard for the next generation of sneakers.

Never forget: No online retailer has the same breadth and depth of selection as Grailed. From OVO exclusives to classic Air Maxes (and everything in between), in no particular order, these are our picks for the Rarest Sneakers on Grailed This Week.
