Everyone may be gravitating towards the workwear ways of Carhartt these days, but Nike SB drew inspiration from the blue-collar brand’s rugged essence in this 2004 Dunk. It wasn’t an official collaboration–a lot of Dunks from that time fall into the same category–but the tough canvas and no-frills design is a clear nod to Carhartt’s strong and subtle brilliance. The upper is completely made of black canvas and sports brown laces, tonal branding on the Swoosh and heel logo, all complete with a dark grey rubber sole. The Nike label on the tongue replicates the colors of the Carhartt “C” logo that adorns the brand’s wares.

Much like the 2018 “Vote Forward” campaign which propelled Sean Wotherspoon’s uber-popular Air Max 1/97 into the hype stratosphere, Nike’s “On Air” competition gave six contestants from around the world a shot at developing their own Air Max sneakers influenced by their hometowns. Cash Ru created this bright blue beauty of an Air Max 97 with the help of Nike’s designers, paying homage to his hometown of Shanghai. The multi-layered heel tabs are meant to emulate the floating clouds in the vast Shanghai sky, which can be found here as the synthetic translucent blue upper. It was far and away the best from 2019’s collection and a colorful ode to the Chinese city.

A very rare find from the Air Max 1 archives, this “Crepe” colorway features the rarely used hemp material along the toe box, tongue and around the collar of the shoe. It is accented by a lovely crepe outsole, while the Birch Blue Swoosh really stands out among the more muted tones. These were released alongside similar Air Max 90s and Air Max Bursts when they dropped in 2004, the same year as another notable “Hemp”-inspired trio was making waves...

Releasing alongside both a green and red pair, this blue “Hemp” SB rounded out the “Hemp Pack.” The upper is completely constructed out of full hemp, which tends to hold up much better than leather or suede in terms of creasing, a notable asset when designing skate shoes that are designed to be worn into the ground. The gum sole adds some depth, while the Cascade Blue colors on the Swoosh, heel, sole and laces give this hemp-infused sneaker some much needed pop. The brightest of the “Hemp Pack” bunch, the entire trio remains difficult to come across 16 years after its release.

It really doesn’t get more “Halloween-inspired” than a full Skeleton graphic going across the side of an Air Force 1, does it? Released as a quickstrike in time for Halloween 2018, this white Air Force 1 features a foot bone printed along the side, giving off a creepy, X-ray vibe, exactly what one may want come spooky season. It’s also topped off with a translucent sole. The sneaker was such a hit that Nike brought it back the following year in an all-black colorway.

As we’ve said before, no one has been able to conjure up truly awesome colorways quite like Nike SB over the years. No type of inspiration, no matter how obscure, is off the board. In 2006, the city of Tokyo’s public transportation system became another out-of-the-box inspiration for an entire collection. This Dunk is an homage to the city’s green and yellow taxis. Clad in a green grass leather upper with yellow accents and a white wraparound Swoosh, one can clearly see the Tokyo taxi influence. There were perforations added to the toebox for added breathability, a must when trying to navigate through those crowded Tokyo streets.

At the time of this sneaker’s release in 2013, the MIA Skateshop had served as a haven for the Miami skating community for 10 years. To celebrate its 10th Anniversary, Nike SB dropped a quickstrike Dunk to commemorate the momentous occasion. The various hues of blue, green, turquoise and orange certainly give off a Miami appearance, but it’s the little details on this that really set it apart from every other bright Dunk in the catalog. First, you have the water graphic panels that makes it look like you’re peering into the crystal clear Miami beach water. There’s also a little palm tree logo on the padded tongue and a translucent icy sole. It was released at a pop-up in Miami on “Go Skateboarding Day” in June 2013. It’s nice to see a Miami-inspired colorway that’s more than just a Dolphins or University of Miami Hurricanes colorway.

Air Max 1s have a history of birthing rare “Safari”-inspired colorways, mostly in collaborations with Japanese brand Atmos. This grey Safari Premium Air Max 1 is all Nike’s doing, and it features many prominent shades of grey, covering the entire spectrum from light to dark, all tied together with a white midsole, white Swoosh and a padded black leather collar. It’s easy for a “Safari” colorway to get lost in Air Max 1 history when there have been some more popular ones, but this greyscale pair from 2008 is a diamond in the rough.

Nike SB, throughout its long and successful history, isn’t afraid to pull inspiration from some of Nike’s most popular and distinguished sneakers, most notably the Air Jordan line. The elegant elephant print from the Jordan III adorns the “Supreme” SB Dunk, one of the most sought after sneakers in the world. And for this “Concord” Dunk from 2013, one can clearly see the patent leather from the Jordan XI shine bright in this reimagined silhouette. This happens a lot within Nike, as we’ve seen SB colorways like the “Rayguns,” for example, resurface in Kyrie Irving’s signature hoops line many years later. The examples are endless, and the execution is a delicate endeavor. This “Concord” Dunk with patent leather overlays and an icy sole are a solid homage to one of the best sneakers of all time. Nowhere near the “Supreme” elephant print Dunks, but a solid find nonetheless.

In the ’80s and ’90s, the main way skaters were able to check out other skaters around the country was through skate tapes. Northern California’s FTC skate shop received the opportunity to collaborate with Nike SB on its own Dunk, just in time for the 20th Anniversary of its skate tape, Finally, which was released in 1993. The colorway, a smooth combination of Work Blue pebbled leather, midnight navy and red, is a nod to the VHS tape’s cover. It is accented by artwork from Oakland rapper Del the Funky Homosapien on the insoles and the heels. It’s a dope homage to a bygone era of skating when a VCR was required for viewing.
