Last week, Jerry Lorenzo revealed the newest colorway of his Nike Fear of God 1–one of 2019’s best sneaker releases–affectionately nicknamed “The Question,” after one of his foremost inspirations, the mercurial Allen Iverson. “I wanted to celebrate the kid who grew up on Jordan Drive in Virginia and aspired to be like his hero,” said Lorenzo in a tribute penned to Iverson.

Iverson was a pound-for-pound terror on the court and a trailblazer in every aspect of his often misunderstood public life. In an era where Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant zigged, Iverson notoriously zagged, delicately balancing his confident brashness with a true-to-self honesty He was a beacon, an uncompromising North Star for everything cool and different in the sports world, and an icon within the culture.

At a time when Michael Jordan was the end-all in the world of sneakers, Iverson carved out his own lane and became a legitimate competitor. He made Reebok basketball sneakers relevant around the world, as his Question and Answer sneakers sold out everywhere from Philly to China. He crossed over to music and tapped Jadakiss for his classic A5 and A6 commercials. Despite being retired for over a decade, his legacy endures. So much so that Lorenzo, a Nike ambassador, openly paid homage to a Reebok athlete in a Nike series of ads. We kick off this week’s list with a hypebeast-approved flip of his iconic Question silhouette, the first in a long line of home runs from Iverson during his time at Reebok.
