The 10 Rarest Sneakers On Grailed: Week of April 19, 2020

Last week, GQ dropped a new cover story featuring none other than the mercurial Kanye West. In the wide-ranging Q&A, West talked about everything from building domes on his Wyoming ranch, to his Christian rebirth and the music that has emanated from it. In the midst of the conversation, he also managed to slip one particularly interesting nugget into the conversation that raised some eyebrows in the sneaker community: West gave Nike his blessing to retro his Air Yeezy I and II sneakers.
“Man, anything that the kids want and the people want,” he said. “People should be able to have what they want.”
Before West’s very public fallout with Nike, he created two signature sneakers for the Swoosh–the Air Yeezy I and II–which released in 2009 and 2012 (with the “Red October” Air Yeezy II surprise releasing in 2014) respectively. The Air Yeezys made West a major player in the sneaker industry and each colorway remains a true grail–whether you’re a West zealot or not–to this day.
With West focusing his energy elsewhere and at least entertaining the possibility of a retro, what are the odds this actually happens? A release would undoubtedly be a success, but would Nike really retro a shoe designed by a competitor? It will remain the biggest unknown in sneakers until a release ultimately materializes...or it simply remains a figment of our collective imaginations.
