If there was ever a sneaker perfectly designed to implement a “rainbow” color palette, it would undoubtedly be Nike’s Air Max 97. With its unique, wavy overlays throughout the upper, the Air Max 97 perfectly lends itself to any multi-colored gradient pattern. Released in 2008, these “Rainbow” Air Max 97s were a Quickstrike release here in the United States and originally retailed for $250. Using a white base for the upper, this sneaker features a full-length multi-colored Air unit, and sports the entire rainbow color spectrum throughout the upper’s waves, from red all the way down to violet.

Showcasing one of the rare, once relatively unknown moments in Michael Jordan folklore, this second iteration of the “Shattered Backboard” Jordan I released in 2016. Its predecessor, which released the year prior, commemorated the 30th anniversary of Michael Jordan shattering a backboard in Europe during a Nike tour in 1985. The orange and black color scheme used in all the “Shattered Backboard” versions represents the jersey Jordan wore during the event. The “Shattered Backboard” series, especially the first two versions, remain some of the most popular non-OG Jordan Is in the collection.

Since the Ultra Boost first debuted in 2015, adidas has never shied away from aquatic colorways (check out its countless collaborations with Parley, for example). These, however, are a product of a tag team with Naked, a Danish retailer, and feature a fresh take on the classic Ultra Boost 1.0 silhouette. The “Waves” Ultra Boost features a lush light aqua Primeknit upper, with matching heel cage, laces and outsole. The sneaker sits atop a white midsole and features subtle Naked branding on the tongue.

Reese Forbes is an important name in the Nike SB lexicon. Aside from being one of the company’s riders in its early days, Forbes is directly responsible for some of the most iconic SB’s of all time, all of which bear his name in some way. In celebration of his accomplishments, Nike SB released this “Reverse Reese Forbes” Dunk in 2017, a subtle reimagining of his classic wheat-flavored classic from 2002. The “Reverse” features a tan suede upper with sand suede overlays. It sits atop a brown gum sole and sports the signature padded tongue. It’s good to see the company still honors the legends who helped pave the way.

Speaking of legendary names in the Nike SB canon, that conversation cannot be had without mentioning Danny Supa. Another former Nike SB rider, Supa dropped this New York-inspired Dunk during the brand’s early days and it has become one of the most important Dunks in the lineage. Sporting the orange and royal blue of the Knicks and Mets, Supa’s Dunk is unmistakably New York, and was the second sneaker released as a part of Nike SB’s “Colors By” series, which officially kicked off the SB brand. While this listing does feature some wear and tear–not surprising for an 18 year-old shoe–it’s a small price to pay for an important piece of Nike SB lore.

In a bit of a departure from its standard Nike SB collaborations–which typically honor its home New England in some form or fashion–Massachusetts-based Concepts broke out this church-inspired “Stained Glass” Dunk High in 2015. Featuring a stained glass window graphic completely covering the upper, the shoe is accented by a black Swoosh. The colors of the graphic are different on each shoe, giving them a unique feel. These were a part of Concepts x Nike SB’s “Grail Pack,” which was released at Concepts’ Boston and NYC locations. The “Grail Pack” featured this stained glass number, a Nike SB Stefan Janoski Max and a Nike SB Dunk Low, all of which came in special limited edition boxes.

Justin Timberlake is a known Jordan-head, and back in 2018 he had the rare distinction of designing his own Jordan alongside [the legendary Tinker Hatfield](https://www.grailed.com/drycleanonly/best-tinker-hatfield-sneakers. Tackling the iconic Jordan III, Timberlake’s “Bio Beige” colorway sports a tan suede upper with an added tonal Swoosh, as well as a black elephant print pattern and the infamous “Nike Air” heel tab. In custom boxes which match the artistic direction of his 2018 “Man of the Woods” album and tour, these sneakers feature the words “Fame Is A Lie” and “Stress Is Cruel” on the insoles. He wore the white version of this shoe during his Super Bowl LII Halftime performance earlier that year.

German sneaker boutique Solebox teamed up with New Balance to produce this high-end take on the 1500 silhouette, dubbed the “Nazar Eye.” Produced at New Balance’s Flimby factory in England, this collaboration places a heavy emphasis on craftsmanship and quality. The shoe features premium black and grey suede, nubuck and mesh throughout the upper and sits atop a white midsole. The idea of the “Nazar Eye” or “Evil Eye” is common among many religions and cultures, and Solebox’s Hikmet Sugoer thought it was the perfect theme to bring to a sneaker collaboration. “How often you see people looking, that envy your shoes,” he said in an interview with Hypebeast. “This time you have a built in protection against envy and evil people with the ‘Evil Eye’ ornament!” What he’s describing is the “Evil Eye” charm which was attached to the laces when the shoe originally released, which was designed to thwart those who envy you and wish evil upon you.

Back in 2006, Nike released a Fantastic Four-themed pack of sneakers, pairing the four members of the Marvel superhero group with four different Nike silhouettes. The brash Johnny Storm (aka Human Torch) inspired a fire-infused Air Max 95. Aside from featuring a bright concoction of yellows, oranges and reds for a fully flammable colorway, Nike designed the entire shoe with a patent leather upper. It’s not the first time Human Torch has received his own shoe, as BAPE crafted a fiery Bapesta back in the day as well. It might be a good time to stock up now before Marvel drops a new Fantastic Four movie (within the Marvel Cinematic Universe this time) and prices go up.

These aren’t exactly the “Pigeon” Dunks, but they are another homage to a local bird. British-based END. teamed up with New Balance to drop this “Grey Gull” 878 in 2019, in a colorway based on the seagulls which populate the coasts of England. The black and grey upper is meant to emulate the bird’s feathers, while the yellow and red accents and “N” patch is meant to mimic the bird’s beak. The shoe sits on an Abzorb midsole and multi-colored outsole, rounding out the seagull image.
