A few weeks ago, a photo surfaced of what some believe to be the most valuable sneakers on the planet: the original “Banned” Nike Air Ships, game-worn and signed by none other than Michael Jordan himself.

Before the Jordan I took the world by storm in 1985, MJ briefly wore the Nike Air Ship in 1984. He wore this particular black and red pair in the preseason, and soon after, received a letter from the league that these were banned due to uniform violations. This revelation was huge news in the sneaker community. For years, the prevailing theory was that the sneakers the NBA banned were the “Bred” Jordan Is (which Jordan Brand even advertised as such), however, it was now confirmed that it was indeed the Nike Air Ship.

The pair Jordan wore featured “Air Jordan” printed on the heel, as opposed to the “Air Ship” branding. Jordan’s time in the Air Ship was short-lived, but it lives on in sneaker lore forever. Not only have we finally found out the true story of the real “Banned” Jordans, but we have unearthed possibly the biggest sneaker grail ever, at least to Jordan fans.

We kick off this week’s list with another rare Air Ship, because as Jordan’s long lost pair indicates, you just don’t see these every day.
