Last week MLB Network released the highly-anticipated documentary “Junior,” chronicling the career of the electrifying Ken Griffey Jr. The Hall of Famer with the gorgeous swing left an indelible mark on and off the diamond, influencing an entire generation of fans who were enamored with his skill, charisma and swagger.

Griffey also made his mark on the sneaker industry, a rarity for a professional baseball player. Throughout the 1990s, Griffey was an important part of the Nike roster. His Air Griffey Max Is and IIs–in their unique “Freshwater” colorways–were certified hits among baseball fans and sneakerheads alike. Nike crafted amazing ad campaigns around Griffey’s ascension. Other than Jordan, there was arguably no one who captivated a crowd on and off the field more than Junior.

While the sneaker industry has always traditionally aligned with basketball, there are a chosen few athletes from other sports who break through. Andre Agassi, Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders are a few. Griffey is another. “The Kid” forever changed the game and always looked good doing it.

No online retailer has the same breadth and depth of selection as Grailed. From Puerto Rico Air Force 1s to St. John’s Dunks (and everything in between)–in no particular order, these are our picks for Grailed’s Sneaker Stories of the Week.
