One of the best University of Oregon PEs to date, these “Pit Crew” Jordan IIIs dropped back in 2019. The PE stays true to the OG III with a black leather upper and the iconic elephant print accents, but adds Oregon touches throughout, primarily the “O” logo on the tongue and the duck foot insignia on the heel. Usually reserved for friends and family of the University of Oregon’s athletic program, the Jordan PEs continue to serve as one of the best perks for Oregon’s athletes (assuming they’re sneakerheads too). Oregon’s PEs have been such a hit in the sneaker community in recent years that Jordan Brand is releasing a Oregon-inspired Jordan V later this year.

Aging like a fine bottle of wine, these “Burgundy” Jordan Vs originally hit shelves way back in 2006. One of the more underrated colorways over the V’s 30-year history, it marks one of the few times a “Burgundy” colorway explicitly received top billing on a Jordan release. The brand typically goes the “Maroon” route (VI, XIII) when extending into the spectrum of darker shades of red, but wine-tinted hues have continued to pop up throughout the history of Jordan’s line. As a man who enjoys a drink and a cigar every now and then, it’s certainly no surprise.

The last time Drake dropped an official collaboration with Jordan Brand it was this pair of OVO-flavored Jordan VIIIs back in 2018. We all know Drake’s highly-publicized beef with Pusha T that same year derailed negotiations with adidas (and a potential deal that was reportedly on the table), but despite all being quiet on the OVO sneaker front, Drake has vehemently been “checks over stripes” in the years since his last release. Hopefully he’ll lend his trademark OVO black and gold to another Jordan silhouette soon, but until then, his take on the VIIIs produced some of its cleaner colorways in recent years.

Before Jerry Lorenzo was crafting his own Nike from the ground up, he collaborated with Vans for a series of colorways for the Era 95 DX model. Featuring a bold all-over “Fear of God” print throughout the upper paneling, the sneaker is contrasted by bright red corduroy overlays along the toe box and heel. The corduroy is a nice touch and a departure from the canvas uppers typically found throughout the Vans product line. Lorenzo has been on quite a run with sneaker collaborations the last few years and it really all started with his work with Vans.

Released back in 2006, these patent leather-clad SB Dunks were released alongside a high-top pair, which comprised the “Goodfellas” Pack. Along with the patent leather, the overlays are covered in a pony hair material, and the all-black sneaker features touches of red along the sole, laces and tongue tag. While it would be rare to see a mob guy actually rocking some of these, it’s even rarer to see these pop up in such good condition. Make an offer he can’t refuse.

Ken Griffey Jr.’s significance in the sneaker game, particularly during the 1990s, cannot be overstated. The coolest baseball player in the world dropped real heat when the Nike Air Griffey Max I released. This year Nike SB paid homage to Junior, with a Freshwater colorway inspired by that old Griffey silhouette. Draping the often-overlooked Dunk Mid is a full Freshwater green upper, offset by black overlays and white accents on the laces and Swoosh. Junior’s number 24 is replaced by 58, which could represent “Club 58,” a collective of skate shop employees.

Nike SB is nothing if not a master curator of all things skate. Way back in 2004, producer/skater/artist Sean Cliver released Disposable: A History of Skateboard Art, a book highlighting the evolution and overall synergy between art and skate culture throughout the years. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Nike SB dropped this “Disposable” Dunk as a quickstrike release. Featuring a black upper with white and grey paneling, the sneaker’s hot pink accents along the Swoosh, laces and collar really make it pop. You can also find the word “Disposable” stitched along the side.

Awake NY’s 2019 collaboration on the Asics Gel Kayano 5 was one of our favorite releases of the year, particularly the grey and green pair. However, another colorway was also released that year, the “Rich Gold” pair featured in this listing. While the green and grey took design cues from New York, this pair takes its cues from Paris and its street lights. The ornate gold then is a necessary selection here along the combo mesh and leather upper, and goes nicely with the 3M accents. Minimal co-branding can be found by the heel, and the gold upper is contrasted with the black midsole and overlays.

No stranger to lush interpretations of running silhouettes, Ronnie Fieg’s Kith imprint dropped a really impressive “Dusty Rose” take on the New Balance 990v2 model earlier this year. The 990v2 has produced some excellent collaborations over the last year, and this take from Kith is no different. The upper is decked in a pastel rose suede, featuring pink mesh panels and silver accents. This was released as a limited “Kithstrike” and sold out instantly, as to be expected.

When Kobe Bryant left Lower Merion High School to enter the 1996 NBA Draft, many thought he was crazy. Within two years, he was voted to an All-Star Team and was ascending into the NBA stratosphere. By year four, he won his first NBA Championship when the Lakers defeated the Indiana Pacers. During those halcyon days of Kobe’s Hall of Fame career, as his star was rising, he was an adidas athlete. After messing around with the Crazy 8s and other adidas models, The Kobe 1 was released in 2000. While these (and the Moon Shoe Kobe 2s which released the following year) have received plenty of flak throughout the sneaker and hoops communities throughout the last 20 years, this remains a cool piece of sneaker nostalgia. The box features photos of a young Kobe–a legend gone far too soon.
