Jerry Lorenzo really knocked it out of the park when he was tasked with creating his first original Nike silhouette from scratch, the high-top Nike Air Fear of God 1. Fitted in a knit upper and encased in a TPU cage, the construction helps stabilize the shoe for its original purpose–playing basketball. Although the Fear of God 1 was conceived to be a performance basketball shoe, it’s become more of a lifestyle piece. This “Oatmeal” colorway was released in 2019 and features tonal accents from the laces through to the translucent sole. It all sits on a double stacked Zoom Air unit.

The “True Blue” Jordan III, one of the iconic sneaker’s original colorways, laid dormant in the Nike archives from 1988 to 2001, when the heralded shoe finally received a proper retro release. After that, the True Blues would see retro releases in 2009 and 2011, before dropping once more in 2016. The 2016 version would see the silhouette revert back to its OG detailing, which means the original Nike Air logo on the heel tab. Despite it being an original colorway, Jordan didn’t rock the “True Blues” in a game until his stint with the Washington Wizards in the early-2000s. Kobe Bryant wore them in the 2003 All-Star Game as well, an homage to his idol who would be playing in his final All-Star Game.

Rei Kawakubo’s label Comme des Garçons has collaborated with Nike many times over the years, from Air Force 1s to Dunks. Back in 2017, Comme des Garçons provided its take on the Nike Dunk High, crafting a clear upper instead of the traditional leather. For its take on the Dunk Low from earlier this year, Comme des Garçons channeled that original blueprint from 2017, crafting an updated version of the clear upper. This version is made of Nexkin, a translucent material which can also be found on the React Element 87 silhouette.

In the early-2000s, Jordan Brand began cranking out patent leather-clad Jordan Is in an attempt to diversify the line. From Carolina Blue to Black and Gold pairs, patent leather–the material made famous on the Jordan XI–would soon be everywhere, so it only made sense to drape the iconic “Chicago” colorway in the patent leather as well. Released in 2003, this patent leather version is technically a Mid, since it only has eight lace holes as opposed to the traditional nine for Highs. It features a Jumpman logo on the tongue and heel, and originally came with a matching metal hangtag.

Not long after Virgil Abloh deconstructed ten classic Nikes for his popular “The Ten” collaboration did he begin to expand to other, newer Nike products, including this Zoom Fly Mercurial silhouette. Draped in a “Total Orange” Flyknit upper, this Off-White version would actually mark Nike’s debut of the silhouette. Virgil’s version features a white Swoosh and dots by the toe box and, in typical Virgil fashion, the word “FOAM” in bold type along the midsole.

In May 2009, Nike SB released a “Ms. Pacman” Dunk Low, paying homage to the classic arcade game. A few months later, Nike SB would release the character’s other half, a high-top “Mr. Pacman” Dunk colorway. This version features a suede navy upper with light blue overlays, a golden Swoosh and trim around the overlays, with red accents along the eyestay and by the heel. It recalls not just the classic Namco character, but the original game’s arcade cabinet. It’s not quite as bright as the “Ms. Pacman” and its bold red and aqua palette, but it does the trick.

Named after the Buenos Aires soccer club, the “Boca Juniors” keep it relatively simple with the blue and yellow theme. The upper consists of both suede and leather construction, with leather paneling and tonal suede overlays. A bright yellow Swoosh covers the side as well as the heel, and the white midsole sits atop a gum sole. The main difference between this version and the 2005 Dunk of the same name, aside from the purely leather construction on the original, is the introduction of Zoom Air on the 2017 pair, for some added cushioning.

It’s no surprise that Allen Iverson enjoys his downtime, specifically one of his off-court passions, fishing. So much so that the Philadelphia 76ers even gifted him a bass fishing boat for his retirement. So it made sense when Nice Kicks and Reebok collaborated on this project to bring that passion to life on the shoe. In a colorway that gives off an old-school Nike ACG vibe, this Reebok Question features leather upper with a suede mudguard and sits atop a speckled grey midsole. Hints of teal, purple, yellow and red can be found throughout.

Famous British designer Vivienne Westwood brought her talents to Asics for this 2019 collaboration of the Gel Kayano 5 silhouette. Dressed in a red upper with orange and blue accents along the mesh and leather upper. The runner features a DuoMax midsole and rubber outsole with Westwood’s emblem printed on the heel.

Back in 2015 Asics collaborated with Chicago retailer Saint Alfred for an homage of the Chicago Loop. This “After Dark” colorway features a brown water-resistant nubuck upper with perforations along the sides. It also features all the necessary technological upgrades, including TexTuff technology in the yellow heel, a GEL midsole and a Mono Tongue Fit System for a responsive, cozy feel.
