Once worn strictly for utility and athletic performance, sneakers have now transcended beyond the realms of basketball, skating and streetwear. It didn’t happen overnight, but they can now be classified as luxury. You can thank Kanye West for his early infiltration into Louis Vuitton a decade ago, producing fashion-forward designs. You can thank Virgil Abloh for his ascension to the top of that same fashion house and his continued fusion of the two aesthetics. The lines between high fashion and streetwear have never been more blurred and sneakers are the biggest beneficiary of that sea change.

Spikes in sneaker costs certainly reflect that sentiment, but sneakers aren’t considered luxury items now solely based on price points. Sneakers have become ubiquitous, whether it be on the court, down the runway or in the boardroom. Established mainstays like Gucci and Louis Vuitton have seen the value of sneakers and make a concerted effort to feature them. Every luxury brand now has at least one sneaker model, and if you don’t, you’re behind. Sneakers are big business.
