It’s a truly rare occurrence when a custom or “bootleg” sneaker design breaks through into the mainstream sneaker community and becomes, at the very least, a collector’s item of sorts. Ari Forman’s “Menthol 10s” flip of the Air Force 1 silhouette is a great example of that when it dropped back in 2006 amid much controversy. Now it appears that Warren Lotas’ take on the SB Dunk is headed in that direction as well. Decked in a red, black and white colorway, the sneaker features the Jason Voorhees mask where the Swoosh would be along the side. It’s not the first time we’ve seen a horror villain on a Dunk before (Freddy Krueger), and from the looks of things, it may not be the last time we see Lotas’s Jason mask on the side of SB bootlegs.

Nike’s React Element 87 silhouette was a surging new product in 2018 and Japanese label Undercover was quick to capitalize on its increasing popularity. Given Undercover designer Jun Takahashi’s long-running (pun not intended) running-focused collaboration line—Gyakusou—with Nike, it makes sense that Undercover would get a crack at this (at the time) new Nike tech. This “Green Mist” colorway–one of four Undercover versions during this release–features tan, green and grey throughout the runner’s translucent upper, while sitting atop a white React-cushioned midsole. Along the upper you’ll also be able to see the most subtle Undercover and Jun Takahashi branding.

The Jordan I Low was once more maligned than the Mid when talking about forgotten Jordan silhouettes. However, the I’s low-top iteration has seen a renaissance in recent years thanks to a slew of new colorways. This reexamination all really started back in 2016 when Jordan Brand dropped the top on the I’s “Chicago” colorway. Sporting the classic red, black and white, the “Chicago” colorway remains undefeated, whether in high, mid or low-top form.

NYC received its own version of the infamous “What The” colorway on the Air Force 1–a shoe NYC helped make famous–back in 2019. Featuring designs and colors meant to pay homage to NYC’s sports teams, you can easily make out the white and blue pinstripes of the Yankees and the blue and orange of the Knick and Mets. In one last nod to NYC and the culture within which the Air Force 1 grew up in, there’s a “New York” graffiti design by the side heel.

Back in 1999, as a part of Nike’s “Concept Japan” program—or “CO.JP” as it’s commonly known—Nike released two Ultraman-themed colorways of its ubiquitous Dunk exclusively in Japan. The two colorways featured inverted variations of the red and grey color scheme made famous by the 1960s sci-fi hero. Neither shoe has received a proper retro release in the two decades since its debut, making it one of the rarer Concept Japan releases. The sneaker in this listing is the original non-reversed colorway (though, after all these years, there’s a discrepancy over which iteration is the true “Ultraman” colorway, and which one is the “Reversed” colorway since many of those selling their old pairs simply list both colorways as “Ultraman”).

Speaking of CO.JP releases, Nike dropped this Navy and Grey take on the Dunk in collaboration with Japanese retailer atmos back in 2001. Also made exclusive to Japan, these were released alongside an Air Force 1 in a matching colorway and were brought back in 2017 in a mismatched version. The Navy and Grey looks a lot like a Georgetown colorway and is really one of the more tame atmos releases of the last two decades–one of the few atmos and Nike collaborations that doesn’t feature an animal print of some kind.

This “Holland” Dunk released back in 2004 in conjunction with that year’s World Cup. It features a bold safety orange upper in leather with black accents, mimicking the Netherlands’ orange-dominated uniforms. That same year, a “Portugal” Dunk was released to align with the World Cup as well, which featured a colorway paying homage to the Portugese uniform color scheme.

After Aimé Leon Dore’s wildly successful New Balance collaboration in 2019 on the 990v2 and 990v5 silhouettes, Teddy Santis and his brand went back to the well the following year for another New Balance product, this time on the much different 827. Released in “White,” “Yellow” and “Red” colorways, each version incorporates all of the primary colors used throughout the entire accompanying apparel collection, featuring splashes of red, yellow, green and blue sprinkled throughout. The 827 originally released in 1999 and features a mesh base with suede overlays and two-tone webbing. It’s capped off with a New Balance Abzorb midsole for extra cushioning. The release proved to be another home run for both Aimé Leon Dore and New Balance.

Last year, London-based Aries linked up with New Balance for two versions of the underrated 991 silhouette. The “Neon Yellow” colorway, which is featured in this listing, was made in England and released alongside an apparel collection. The upper is decked in a neon yellow colorway pulsating throughout the suede and mesh, and features silver accents throughout. Subtle Aries branding can be found by the heel. The entire collection released at a London pop-up before a handful of exclusive retailers.

Released in 2018, the “World Map” Gel Lyte III is another in a long line of successful collaborations between Japanese retailer atmos and Asics. In an effort to promote the brand’s presence around the world, they decided to print a map of the globe throughout the upper. Only the inside panel of each shoe sports a Navy logo, whereas the outside are tonal map drawings. They sit atop a white midsole and an icy outsole by the heel. Truly a cartographer’s dream shoe.
