If there was ever a sneaker left for dead, it was the Nike Air Ship. Holding the rare distinction as being the first kicks a young Michael Jordan rocked in the NBA, the shoe was relegated to archival obscurity once the Jordan I dropped in 1985. That was, of course, until 2020.
Earlier this year, the Nike Air Ship saw the light of day for the first time since the mid-’80s, forming one half of the “New Beginnings” Pack that was released during All-Star Weekend.
Yes, the Air Ship is notorious for being the first sneaker Michael Jordan played in as a rookie with the Chicago Bulls. However, its legend grew even more when it was unveiled to the sneaker community that a Black and Red Air Ship–not the “Bred” Jordan I–was the real Nike sneaker “banned” by the NBA.
That “Banned” pair of Air Ships is now making its way into the market via a European-exclusive retro release. In a rare sneaker milestone, it marks the first time the true “Banned” Jordan–the sneaker that spawned a marketing campaign and a league memo to Nike–hits shelves. If 2020 has given us anything, it’s given us the biggest year for the Air Ship in four decades.
