Last week sneakerheads were treated to a rare retro release of a 1990s classic, the Nike Air Griffey Max 1 in the original “Freshwater” colorway. Junior hasn’t swung a bat in the big leagues since 2010, but that didn’t stop his OG signature Nike from selling quickly in retailers around the world last Monday.

Griffey was a formidable asset on the 1990s Nike roster. His perfect swing, charismatic aura and diving catches in centerfield made him must see TV. Kids on the east coast would always stay up late to catch Griffey’s highlights on SportsCenter. While with Nike, he was given both quality sneakers and equally impressive marketing campaigns, which matched his on-field exploits. It might be hard to remember now, but aside from Michael Jordan, Nike’s roster of signature athletes in the 1990s was a who’s who of athletic royalty–Penny Hardaway, Charles Barkley, Andre Agassi–and Junior was arguably the next biggest athlete of the era.

The Air Griffey Max 1 was a pillar of the great non-Jordan Nike signatures from the 1990s. Despite an impressive collection of sneakers, the Griffey Max 1 in that original Freshwater colorway remains the best sneaker Junior ever donned on the diamond. It’s nice to see that his sneakers are still being sought after by the next generation of sneakerheads.

Junior still serves as an inspiration to many of our favorite athletes, most notably LeBron James. A few years ago, James was releasing limited quantities of LeBron XV PEs inspired by some of his favorite athletes and sneakers. Griffey served as the inspiration for one, but more on that in a minute. In the meantime, check out this week’s releases, which includes the exciting Cosmic Unity from Nike (on top of some new Dunk Highs) which are sure to work the SNKRS App into a frenzy.
