Despite ongoing concerns about COVID-19 and the safety of its players and coaches, the NBA still opted to move forward with its annual All-Star Game festivities in Atlanta last weekend. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the traditional weekend of events was condensed to one day and didn’t go off without a few last minute hitches–76ers All-Stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons each had to miss the game due to contact tracing after close contact with a shared barber who tested positive.

Second guessing and dissection of the decision to continue with the All-Star festivities aside, All-Star Weekend has traditionally been a marquee event within the sneaker industry.

On the court, the game has become a showcase for new and exciting colorways. Michael Jordan himself would break out unique colorways like the “Aqua” VIIIs, “Columbia” XIs and “Bordeaux” VIIs, in addition to classics like the Black/Cement IIIs, which he only wore one time, in the 1988 All-Star Game. We’ve seen everything over the years from Chris Webber’s chromed out Dadas to Shaquille O’Neal’s enormous cellphone shoe. This year, the league’s best and brightest didn’t disappoint on the sneaker front.

Some of the highlights from this year’s pre-game tunnel included LeBron James arriving in the latest edition of Virgil Abloh’s Off White x Nike Air Force 1 “University Gold” colorway, first-time All-Star Mike Conley arriving in the Dior x Jordan I and Luka Doncic rocking the Union x Jordan IV. On the court, Kawhi Leonard debuted the newest colorway of his New Balance signature sneaker in a “Neo Flame” colorway, Three-Point Contest winner Steph Curry wore the “International Women’s Day” colorway of his Curry 8 signature, and Jaylen Brown paid tribute to Tracy McGrady with his “Humble & Hungry” T-Mac 2s.

Keeping with the All-Star theme, this week’s upcoming releases are headlined by the Kobe 6 Protro “All-Star” colorway, a pair the late legend donned 10 years ago at the 2011 Game. In addition, the pair of Reebok Questions Allen Iverson wore during the 2001 game will be hitting retailers this week as well.
