Ever since husband-and-wife duo Luke and Lucie Meier took over the reigns of Jil Sander in 2017, the revered house of German minimalism has staged an unprecedented comeback not seen since Raf Simons was at the helm. However, given the co-directors resumes ranging from Supreme and OAMC to Dior and Louis Vuitton, respectively, it could have been expected.

Combining street elements with couture experience but always rooted in the house’s minimalist codes, each Jil Sander piece is an incredibly well thought out exercise, beautiful clothes that do exactly what they are supposed to do, and the bonded bucket hat is no different. While seemingly your average bucket hat, the Meiers used a bonded material that allows the hat to both trap heat and repel water, meaning your head stays not only dry but warm to boot. In effect, it's similar to the classic bonded, water-repellent trench coats from brands like Burberry or Mackintosh. That said, it comes at a cost. This era of Jil Sander is by no means cheap, but thankfully you can find used examples for a fraction of the cost on Grailed.

With Arc’teryx’s recent surge, the inclusion of its beloved Sinsolo hat should be no surprise. A label signature, the Canadian outdoor outfitter offers these year round, and they were a hit long before gorpcore took over Instagram moodboards and cemented itself as the menswear trend to beat.

Made from a lightweight polyester with a breathable mesh underlay, this water-resistant hat is entirely packable and when rolled up fits easily into a breast or back pocket. Incredibly lightweight, this is perfect for those fickle spring days when rain seems like a possibility but a jacket is simply overkill. Plus, given that the fossil bird logo is now a serious flex, those paying any sort of attention will take immediate notice. Whether it’s from the brand on its own, or an iteration crafted as part of Arc’teryx’s recent collaboration with Palace, this is one worth looking out for.

Since the late-’90s, the Gucci bucket hat has been a street icon. Though initially associated with cheap diffusion lines and licensing deals, the Gucci bucket became a New York status symbol, embraced by everyone from Biggie and Jay-Z to Harlem couturier—and eventual Gucci collaborator—Dapper Dan. Though for years Gucci attempted to shed this image, following backlash, an eventual regime change (and apology), today Gucci embraces this beloved piece of its history.

Though today there are many versions, the classic monogram print canvas version in tan with a Gucci grosgrain stripe is still the go-to for everyone from crazed Gucci fanatics to vintage die-hards. While new versions have merit--—premium construction, higher-end materials and a separate lining—we still prefer those faded and worn early-’00s versions. If it’s good enough for Hova, it’s good enough for you.

Given the streetwear unicorn’s now mythic status, we clearly had to include the Supreme 5-panel on this list. Arguably as famous as the box logo itself, Supreme has dropped 5-panels nearly every season since its inception, and ever since the Odd Future days when Tyler, The Creator wouldn’t be caught dead wearing anything else, they have literally flown off the shelves.

Decades later, Supreme has cycled through every fabric, color, texture and tone imaginable, but for spring weather we feel the wool versions are best—particularly those made in collaboration with celebrated Italian mill Loro Piana. The semi-frequent collaborator lends the streetwear labor high-end, lush and super durable fabric for a hat that not only holds its shape tremendously, but keeps your head warm to boot. Also, when considering the price point of Loro Piana’s in-house equivalent, the Supreme version is a steal.

Yes, before you complain about the hat we’re recommending being created out of wool (and understanding that water and wool aren’t the best of friends), keep in mind that not every spring day is a rainy one. Consider this cap for those days.

For archive fashion collectors, Prada’s once-shuttered diffusion line holds a special place near and dear to their hearts. Launched in 1998, the high-fashion sportswear line was years ahead of its time, and despite designer Miuccia Prada’s insistence that technical fabrics with a high-fashion mindset were the way of the future (and, for those of you paying attention, they clearly were) the line was eventually shuttered. Thankfully, as part of the Fall/Winter 2018 collection, Prada relaunched Linea Rossa with a whole line of technical outerwear ranging from ski parkas to nylon bucket and dad hats.

While the nylon bucket hat with the rubberized red logo is already a fan favorite—particularly in the more outlandish metallic and neon colorways—we prefer the simple baseball cap (see: “dad hat”). Whether you’re opting for a vintage option with the red rubber stripe (the literal “Linea Rossa”), or a nylon cap with Prada’s recognizable triangle logo, we love the durable simplicity and utilitarian nature of an exceptionally well made dad-style staple.

We couldn’t compile a hats list without including America’s most notable cap purveyor, New Era. The official hat supplier for the Majors, New Era is a world-recognized icon, particularly in men’s fashion, thanks to the Yankees’ (and Yankee hat’s) international crossover appeal. While New Era regularly collaborates with fashion labels, New York’s own Aimé Leon Dore boasts one of the most sought-after New Eras in recent memory, the chain stitched fitted cap.

Though designer and Queens-native Teddy Santis remains loyal to his local Mets, his brand pays respect to New York as a whole, so both its MLB teams are represented in this recurring capsule. While fabrics and materials change between drops, the wool version featuring a leather back strap is our favorite come springtime. As for whether to pick Mets or Yankees, we’ll leave that choice up to you.

Referred to as “the master” for a reason, Yohji Yamamoto has perfected the art of sensual menswear. Though themes range between collections, the core tenets—classic silhouettes, Japanese-inflected minimalism and, of course, a black color palette—remain the same. As such, traditional menswear tropes including long trenches, double breasted blazers and wide brim black hats—like the one the designer himself wears constantly—are omnipresent.

Of course, these are not the sort of stiff fedora-like hats found within cliché film noirs of the 1950s, but are hats made from lush materials such as rabbit felt or suede, and made soft and foldable for the sort of insouciance that Yamamoto’s many devoted fans adore. Though easily the priciest option on this list, for those looking for a serious statement—and willing to take the risk to pull these off—they are well worth it.

Ever since Noah founder Brendon Babenzien left Supreme to re-launch Noah in 2015, his pivotal role in defining the streetwear giant’s aesthetic up to that point quickly became apparent. While, in the years since, the designer has used Noah to explore more personal references—ranging from track & field to sailing and even his native Long Island—there’s no denying that Noah has roots in classic New York streetwear. From the onset, Noah sold graphic tees, heavyweight hoodies, some jeans and, of course, 5-panel hats.

Unlike his time with Supreme, however, Babenzien’s Noah was considerably more luxe, using premium and often sustainable materials in unexpected patterns and colorways. Like Supreme does with the Loro Piana hats above, Noah often employs premium Italian wool for its spring drops. Featuring the classic Noah logo. Though “grown-up streetwear” is often a divisive term, when it comes to Noah, it could not be more endearing.
