“She ain’t no hoodrat, she ain’t got to prove that / I peeped her McCartneys, Stella got her groove back,” is my favorite line from Kanye West on his cheeky remix of Rich Boy’s 2007 smash hit “Throw Some D’s.” Not only did ‘Ye reference the classic romantic comedy flick, the former Louis Vuitton Don paid homage to Stella McCartney for her stellar work in womenswear. After focusing on making female garments since the beginning of her eponymous Fashion house in 2001, the celebrated London-based designer is more than ready to clothe men in her very own tailored threads.
Stella surreptitiously declared her foray into menswear territory through her husband Alasdhair Willis, who wore a form fitting, four button, double-breasted suit and slim pants with cargo pockets on each leg from the men focused, Stella McCartney collection. Willis was spotted wearing his wife’s sleek attire while seated at the front row of her Paris Fashion Week Spring 2017 women’s ready to wear show. When Stella was asked about the inspiration behind her first menswear collection, she told Vogue UK: “I of course looked to the men in my life, my husband, my father, my friends. I also thought of great men of the world, people who have had an impact, like artists and musicians. We really drew inspiration from London as well, in particular it’s musical history; we wanted that feeling and spirit.”
Its only right that Stella’s father rubbed off on her, after all he is the one and only Sir Paul McCartney (please forgive him for that awkward Mannequin Challenge attempt). As a matter of fact, before fully embarking on her men’s line, the Central Saint Martins alumna was designing one off bespoke suits for the former Beatles’ front man. The younger McCartney officially debuted her menswear collection on November 2016, alongside her Pre Spring 2017 womenswear collection, at a celebrity-studded party held in London’s historic Abby Road Studios. The recording studio, made famous by Paul’s iconic group in the 1960s, is near and dear to Stella as she frequently went there growing up. “As a house we really don’t take ourselves too seriously. We’re not approaching this in a conventional manner; we don’t want to do it in the same way as everyone else. We’re starting something new and we wanted to do it in a new way, because this is like nothing we’ve ever done before,” says Stella explaining why she didn’t showcase her men’s clothes at menswear fashion week.
The shindig featured models who were draped in Stella’s men’s designs - consisting of zip up cargo pants, boxy jackets, socks with open sandals, striped pajama-like tops with shorts or sporty drawstring trousers - while they mingled around with an A-list crowd, and even featured live performances from some of music’s greats, including Mike D from Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, Paul Simon and more. Stella also previewed her latest women’s offerings in a separate, large recording room with female models wearing her pre Spring 2017 selections.
The 45-year-old designer’s first menswear collection consists of casual and luxe sportswear garments, which feature playful prints and texture combos. In 1995, Stella served as an apprentice to Edward Sexton-her dad’s favorite tailor in Savile Row- so it is without a doubt that fine tailoring plays a major role in her vetements. “There’s definitely a kind of street, sport, youthful vibe to this collection, and then there’s definitely the heritage that I have in Savile Row tailoring. It’s sort of unavoidable for me,” says McCartney to WWD.
45 % of Stella’s menswear collection is made from environment-friendly and used materials, such as recycled nylon, regenerated cashmere, organic cotton and denim, sustainable viscose, wood and cork, and eco alter nappa. Furthermore, due to her Vegetarianism, McCartney does not use leather or fur in products. Accessories include non-leather dress shoes, “vegan sneakers,” jewelry and handbags. Prices will vary from $273 for a T-shirt, $435 for pants to $1,553 for suits.
McCartney’s male oriented line will be available in 15 of her 42 stores and approximately 200 wholesale providers worldwide, including retailers such as Selfridges in London and Manchester, I.T in China, Apropos in Germany, Saks Fifth Avenue in the States, Restir in Tokyo. Stella’s men’s products will also be available online via MatchesFashion.com and SSENSE.com.
The much-anticipated collection won’t be in stores until January 2017, but you can pre-order your favorite Stella men’s spring 2017 looks online now.
