Even if you don’t recognize the name “Tommy Ton,” trust us: You know his work.

One of the world’s most beloved and game-changing street style photographers, Ton is a major reason the street style looks like it does—or even exists—today. Ton’s early exposure to fashion begins in his native Canada, working behind the scenes at Toronto department store Holt Renfrew. Going from the shop floor to the buying team, Ton was able to shape his own point-of-view on fashion’s past and present. The experiences were a catalyst for the inevitable launch of his website Jak & Jil, in 2005. What began as a way to document the style of Torontonians expanded into a full-on street style blog, with Ton’s images appearing in GQ and on the beloved-but-now-defunct-Style.com.

Documenting the global fashion week circuit—bouncing around fashion capitals like New York, London, Milan, and Paris—Ton has captured nearly every influential individual both within and outside the modern fashion world. This photo archive includes a notorious street style shot taken during Paris Fashion Week in 2009, featuring Kanye West and his crew—which featured then-relatively unknown names like Don C and Virgil Abloh.

Celebrities and famous faces aside, Ton’s work earned plaudits for its unique focus on intimate details and small moments—whether that’s a circle of anonymous models and their designer handbags, clustered outside of a runway show, or the rarely-photographed fringe bangs on Rei Kawakubo’s head as she ducks into a private car.

That eye for detail has translated from the sidewalk to the runway, as Ton currently serves as creative director for cult-favorite New York-based label Deveaux. It’s Ton’s time in the streets among fashion’s biggest fans that have translated into his designs, shaping the collections that will ultimately be snapped up by a new generation of street style photographers surely inspired by his groundbreaking vision.

Here, as we celebrate Ton’s effect on our industry and the images that have shaped it, we’ve teamed with Ton to resurface and reintroduce some of his most impressive photography, giving both new fashion fans and longtime followers a chance to dissect, discuss and enjoy some of the most inspiring street style images of all time.

Tommy Ton's closet sale goes live on Thursday, November 19th at 12PM ET.
