We have talked extensively about the fleece’s surging popularity over the past few seasons, and despite the mountains of Patagonia Retro-X-clad tech bros, we don’t see the trend stopping anytime soon. While the circa early-’00s vest is a bit passé, this season everyone from outdoor stans to Japanese fashion die-hards is embracing the big fleece—and when we say big, we mean it.

Thick pile, oversized and bold, this winter everyone should opt for a fleece jacket that’s not just literally large, but big in every conceivable notion of the word. Of course, fan favorite Kapital provides the clearest example, with its sashiko-stitched boldly colored Boa fleece that might as well double as a parka, but even Patagonia and The North Face are chipping in, the latter just reintroducing it’s original Denali fleece from 1995—bright primary colors, boxy cut and all.

While the style may seem rather straightforward, with a jacket this loud, simple is a good thing. Particularly considering winter color palettes tend towards muted, add a bright fleece jacket as the statement piece to elevate any winter fit. Wear with contrast tones to ensure the color truly pops.

Whether or not you truly believe tailoring is coming back, you cannot deny the amount of stylish men reconsidering blazers, trousers and dress boots. No doubt a reaction to streetwear’s meteoric-rise and wide-spread acceptance, designers from Raf Simons to Kim Jones have openly said they are attempting to move away from hoodies and T-shirts and focus on traditional men’s furnishings.

While the results are mixed, men once again seem interested in experimenting with tailored garments this season, donning thick gauge wool blazers, straight leg cords and double breasted or highly textured overcoats. Considering all these pieces were originally designed for the colder months, and the sheer amount of layering they require, this modern approach to tailoring is ideal for winter. While we are not suggesting you don a full suit in a snowstorm, a wool/mohair blend blazer over a cashmere turtleneck (or even a heavyweight french terry hoodie) might just be the look of the season. Layer your tailored topcoat and trousers with a down-filled mid layer, or swap for a workwear-inspired jacket in place of a blazer (or if it's really chilly, the collared shirt underneath everything else).

If fall was all about hiking, then this winter takes things up a notch. While the hiking-chic trend incorporated outdoor fabric and color palettes into street-ready outfits, this look co-opts the advanced fabric research required for high-altitude mountaineering and recontextualizes it for a look that’s just as suited for the Arctic Tundra as it is for the arctic chill sweeping across the East Coast this season.

Of course, for brands like Acronym and Arc’teryx—its Veilance line in particular—the idea of clothing suited for multiple environments is their bread and butter. But with brands like Prada and Palace suddenly utilizing Polartec and Gore-Tex technology, there’s no better time to go straight to the source.

Similar to the fleece, this is less a full “look” than a vibe, however it’s certainly one that we all strive for all winter long. Essentially, a statement coat is a look in and of itself. Whether the classic Polo Double-Breasted camel coat, a lush mohair overcoat or daring Glen Plaid number, by donning an overtly loud winter coat you immediately make a statement—hence the “statement” coat—and depending on the coat you choose, the statement follows.

In order to nail this look, keep things otherwise muted—as the name implies the coat should do the talking. Your everyday trousers, hoodie, sneakers or boots alongside the loudest coat your can muster is a look that never goes out of style.

There are plenty of winter coat options, but when it comes to staying warm, the puffer reigns supreme. While the jackets can be unwieldy at times, a few new brands—alongside some old favorites—have found a way to slim down the by definition pillowy jackets to create a streamlined look the conjures feelings of classic '90s New York, French ski-chalet chic and the American outdoors all in one.

Consider the puffer's inherent size, whether you are rocking a vest or coat in order to own this look you need to nail down the proportions. A straight leg trouser and jeans, boots, and maybe a beanie alongside a perfect puffer is all it takes to instantly transform into the best looking, warmest version of yourself.
